The home side missed a great opportunity to take the lead with only two minutes on the clock when Milutin Osmajic’s effort from inside the area went just wide of the right post.
Genoa were duly punished 11 minutes later when Adrien Rabiot broke into the area before squaring the ball to Alphadjo Cisse, whose first-time effort found the bottom left corner.
Things went from bad to worse for the hosts just over five minutes later when the ball was worked across the area with Goncalo Ramos’ pass finding Christian Pulisic, who took a touch before slotting past Justin Bijlow at the near post to double Milan’s lead.
The Rossoblù were competing well in general play, and they thought they had halved the deficit on the half-hour mark when Osmajic headed into the bottom right corner, but the flag went up for offside to end the celebrations, with the hosts’ frustrations continuing when Leo Ostigard’s close-range header was well saved by Mike Maignan in the final minute of normal time.
Genoa had produced a real resurgence of late after failing to win any of their opening five matches of the season, with Daniele De Rossi’s men registering four victories in their previous five matches. However, they were struggling to rediscover that form as they continued to be kept at bay by a Rossoneri side who have enjoyed playing on their travels so far this season.
As expected, Genoa applied plenty of pressure late on, and they managed to set up a grandstand finish when Mikael Egill Ellertsson’s effort from 25 yards beat the unsighted Maignan two minutes from time.
But the hosts ultimately fell just short as Milan negotiated a nerve-wracking five added minutes to claim victory.
The Rossoneri have now won four of their last five league matches as their strong start to the season continues. They have climbed one place to fourth – five points behind leaders Lazio – while Genoa drop a place to 15th.
