It was a crucial meeting in Enschede, where FC Twente and Ajax met just three days after their European wins over Pafos and FC Midtjylland - the winner of Sunday's match would overtake Feyenoord as the new league leaders following their 5-3 defeat to Heerenveen earlier on Sunday.
The game got off to a storming start in Enschede, with Tolu continuing his incredible scoring form by heading Ajax ahead within three minutes. It's the third consecutive game in which the Nigerian star opens the scoring early with a header.
The spectacular opening phase continued with another chance for Ajax, as Owen Wijndal blasted the ball over the bar just minutes before Twente's Daan Rots towered over Wijndal and aimed a header at goal, where it was caught by Marc ter Stegen.
After Daouda Weidmann narrowly missed Ter Stegen's goal, Jorthy Mokio was the next to have a go at goal, but the Congolese's effort flew over Joel Drommel's crossbar.
There seemed to be no end to the chances in Enschede, where FC Twente came closest after Tolu's goal by hitting the post on the cusp of half-time.
Ajax took a step back in the second half and was on the receiving end of Twente's high press, which yielded the hosts several big chances - Weidmann fired a low shot just wide, before Wout Weghorst, Younes Taha, and Weidmann again aimed shots at Ter Stegen's goal, but to no avail.
Instead, wunderkind Rayane Bounida doubled Ajax's lead with their first shot of the second half - the Moroccan midfielder received the ball in midfield and let one rip from distance, surprising Drommel and burying it in the bottom corner.
FC Twente's reply came shortly after Bounida's goal, with a deflected corner landing in Ajax's goal from the head of an unsuspecting Dies Janse.
The game was controversially interrupted just before Sofyan Amrabat lost the ball in his own penalty box, surrounded by three Twente players, when VAR official Dennis Higler called referee Joey Kooij over to the screen for a potential penalty. Much to the chagrin of the home players and fans, the stoppage was for nothing, with Kooij denying Ajax a penalty for a potential handball.

With minutes remaining, FC Twente were awarded a penalty when Lucas Rosa pulled down Ramiz Zerrouki, which Kooij deemed enough for a spot-kick after a VAR check. Wout Weghorst stepped up to hurt his former team and scored from the spot to salvage a late point.
There were no winners in Enschede, where Ajax dropped two valuable points in the final seconds of the game and thus missed the chance to claim the top spot. Feyenoord remain the league leaders on goal difference as Ajax and Twente head into the international break.
