Skanderborg AGF saw its first Champions League adventure come to an end following a nail-biting conclusion to the opening group stage. The Danes lost 27–30 at home to Barcelona and failed to get the necessary help as Romania’s Dinamo Bucuresti defeated Montpellier 36–26.

Consequently, Skanderborg AGF finished third in the group, behind Barcelona and Dinamo Bucuresti, thereby missing out on a spot in the intermediate round.

Skanderborg AGF, however, put up a strong fight at home at the Djurslands Bank Arena. The hosts remained competitive for much of a tight and nerve-wracking encounter, but eventually, the defending Champions League titleholders, Barcelona, pulled away to secure the victory.

Ultimately, the two victories Skanderborg AGF had previously secured against Montpellier in the group stage proved insufficient. A draw and a defeat against Dinamo Bucuresti, combined with two losses to Barcelona, left Skanderborg AGF with five points after six matches.

The Romanian side finished with the same number of points but held the advantage in the head-to-head record against Skanderborg AGF, who will now continue their season in the European League.

As expected, the Catalans established a narrow lead early in Thursday’s match. However, Skanderborg AGF stayed right in the mix. Johan Hansen delivered an efficient first half, scoring four goals from four attempts.

At halftime, the two teams were separated by just a single goal, and the home side kept the pressure on the Spaniards after the break.

With just under 15 minutes remaining, Emil Laerke really electrified the crowd by hammering a powerful long-range shot into the back of the net. The score was level, and the hope of an upset began to grow within the arena.

Jeppe Cieslak also performed well, finishing as the home team’s leading goalscorer with six goals from six attempts. However, despite an impressive effort from Skanderborg AGF, Barcelona proved clinical and ultimately sealed the match. Aleix Gomez was the Spaniards' leading goalscorer with six goals
