Winner: Kylian Mbappe

On the eve of the Ballon d'Or ceremony, two serious contenders for the prestigious trophy met at Camp Nou. And they did so in the most famous match in world football.

Barcelona's leading candidate for the award, Lamine Yamal, was completely overshadowed by Mbappe, who bagged a brace in a 2-1 win for Real Madrid. It was all the sweeter because he denied their eternal rivals a place in the record books. Had they won, the hosts would have become the first team in LaLiga history to take maximum points from their opening 10 matches.

Mbappe initially had some luck when centre-back Gerard Martin blasted the ball into him while clearing it, sending it off the onrushing striker's shin and into the net.

Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga combined beautifully for the second, with Mbappe tapping the ball into an open net. It was his 100th goal in the famous Madrid shirt.

Last May, he scored a hat-trick at Camp Nou, but it was of no use to Real as they lost 4-3. This time he could celebrate.

Loser: Michael Carrick

No team in the Premier League has fewer wins than United, who have managed just one in eight matches. A humiliating 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth capped a dreadful week, during which Manchester United were thrashed 4-1 by Como in the Champions League.

Afterwards, captain Bruno Fernandes criticised the manager, saying he had chosen an overly cautious approach. The result? Michael Carrick dropped Fernandes to the bench for the league match. You know the rest…

The gamble, driven by wounded pride, simply failed. It was as if the United boss had no idea how important the Portuguese midfielder is to the team. Without him, his teammates have won just once in 10 games.

Carrick even hinted that Fernandes could be fined for his comments and stripped of the captaincy. However, he is likely to be there not much longer...

Winners: Aston Villa

They had just one point after their first four matches. Then they beat Tottenham and have not looked back. Manchester City also fell to them, losing 2-1 after being perfect before facing Aston Villa. The Birmingham club once again showed that they have City's number, winning four of their last five meetings!

Unai Emery's side have taken 22 points from their last eight matches in all competitions, with seven wins and one draw.

Nicolas Jackson scored both goals in the win. Chelsea decided to let him go because of his poor output, and his loan spell at Bayern was hardly a success either. He has now proved again that moving to Birmingham was an excellent choice.

He has played 11 matches for his new club so far, scoring seven goals. He also explained that his thumbs-down celebration is aimed at everyone who did not believe in him.

Losers: Fiorentina

They could have pulled off a sensational result. Fiorentina, who have struggled for a second straight season, were unexpectedly heading for victory at San Siro and a win over previously unbeaten Inter Milan. They were 1-0 up in the 91st minute, despite coming under enormous pressure.

But the hosts first equalised through Marcus Thuram, and Fiorentina could not even hold on for a draw. In the 95th minute, young defender Víctor Valdepenas committed a naive foul, pulling Thuram's shirt and conceding a penalty.

The hosts completed the comeback from the spot three minutes later, showing their remarkable character.

It was the fourth time they had won in Serie A this season after falling behind. Against Napoli and Udinese, they had even trailed by two goals. Fiorentina's case was a special one, though. It was only the third time in Inter's history that they had completed a comeback after the 90th minute.

In 2005, they did so in one of the club's most famous comebacks against Sampdoria, when they were still 2-0 down in the 88th minute (91st and 93rd minutes), and six years later, away to Cesena (91st and 95th minutes).

Winner: Julian Alvarez

Throughout August, he tried to force Atletico Madrid's hierarchy to sanction a move to rivals Barcelona. It came to nothing. The Argentine striker therefore returned to the Metropolitano. When he made his first league appearance there, few were surprised that the fans whistled and booed him. That is not easily forgiven.

Perhaps it is not impossible to make amends, though. On Saturday, Alvarez's goal earned a 1-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna - Atletico's sixth consecutive league victory.

Perhaps because the fans celebrated his goal, he tried to apologise after the match. He faced the media and, before taking the first question, asked to speak. He held his hands up and admitted that he had made a mistake in the summer.

Coach Diego Simeone praised the gesture, and it seems the whole unpleasant episode is now closed. Especially as Alvarez has found his form. After a slow start to the season, he has now hit his stride and has recorded a goal or an assist in three consecutive matches.

Loser: Lewis Forshaw

Does the name mean anything to you? Don't worry, that is not a sign of ignorance. He is Burnley's youth-team goalkeeper and has yet to make a senior appearance, despite being 20 years old.

The Manchester United academy graduate is known as a penalty specialist, but Friday's clash with West Ham's youngsters also made it clear where he has room for improvement. At London's Rush Green Stadium, he conceded two goals from the halfway line!

If you watch the two incidents from the start, you will not be able to tell them apart. Republic of Ireland international Josh Cullen, working his way back after a long injury lay-off, was looking to rebuild his confidence against West Ham's youngsters. Instead, he came unstuck.

On both occasions, he lost the ball beyond halfway while facing three opponents. It fell to Preston Fearon, who did not hesitate to fire a long-range shot at goal, with Forshaw unable to get back in time. On the second attempt, as the tragic finale to the whole episode, he even fell over…
