As we move into the month of March, the football world shows no signs of slowing down, with several intriguing league and cup battles over the weekend. As usual, we've picked out our Winners and Losers from the past few days.

Winner: Mika Biereth

It's been an incredible month for 22-year-old Mika Biereth. The Monaco striker scored three league hat-tricks during February - a remarkable achievement that is underlined by some eye-catching statistics.

He became the first Ligue 1 footballer to score at least three goals in three consecutive appearances on home soil. Before him, Thadee Cisowski did it in a Racing jersey back in 1956. The Dane is also the first player in 70 years to score three hat-tricks in his opening seven games in the French top flight.

Monaco paid only 13 million to Sturm Graz for Biereth's services in January - what a purchase that's looking to be.

Loser: Jean-Philippe Mateta

There are some matches that players don't remember and weren't destined to finish. Jean-Philippe Mateta had one of those over the weekend for Crystal Palace

It was during the eighth minute of an FA Cup clash against Millwall that goalkeeper Liam Roberts made contact with Mateta's face in an awful high-footed challenge.

Doctors treated Mateta for a long time, immediately giving him an oxygen mask and later taking him straight to the ambulance on a stretcher. As the club later reported on its official website, further examinations did not confirm any serious injuries.

The Frenchman left hospital with 25 stitches after doctors attended to a laceration behind his left ear. What was most surprising was that referee Michael Oliver had only given Roberts a yellow card before the VAR system rightly intervened.

Winner: Isco

The midfielder left Real Madrid three years ago having lifted the Champions League five times, the European Super Cup three times, as well as three LaLiga titles and one Copa del Rey Cup triumph.

However, times have changed. Isco now dons a Betis jersey and it was with them that he brought down his former employer. Stepping up to the penalty spot in the 54th minute, he gave Thibaut Courtois no chance, helping his side to a 2-1 victory.

Isco dashed Real's title hopes as neither Atletico nor Barcelona faltered, with both sides leapfrogging the Madrid giants in the table.

"I apologise to all Real Madrid fans for my celebration. I wanted to make it clear once again, sorry. I am extremely grateful to Real, they will always be in my heart as a club and I will not stop cheering for them," Isco said after the game.

Loser: Matheus Cunha

Moving back to the FA Cup, one of Wolves' key men failed to keep his composure, costing the side dearly in their fifth-round match against Bournemouth.

Matheus Cunha might have proved his quality with a stunning equaliser on the hour mark, however, he undid all his good work with a moment of madness at the end of extra time.

Milos Kerkez pulled him by the jersey and the 25-year-old Brazilian swiped at his opponent with his hands before motioning forward with his head.

Cunha was subsequently shown a red card for his actions, and that was costly as Bournemouth claimed the win on penalties, sending Wolves out of the cup for another year.

Winner: Ivan Marcano

September 15th, 2023 is a day that will forever be etched in Ivan Marcano's memory. He spent less than nine minutes on the pitch in a league fixture as he tore his anterior cruciate ligament.

That injury kept him sidelined for 533 days, but the Spaniard made his long-awaited return over the weekend at Arouca, with the 37-year-old playing 75 minutes in a routine 2-0 win for Porto.

Loser: Houston Dynamo

Inter Miami, whose jersey is worn by several legendary names, including Lionel Messi, travelled to the Houston Dynamo's ground on Sunday.

Even before kick-off, however, it was clear that one of the best football players in history would not play. This was confirmed by an Inter spokesman. In agreement with the club, Messi remained off the lineup and rested.

In fact, the team, which is co-owned by David Beckham, has played three matches in a short space of time (since 20 February). Two in the CONCACAF Cup and one in the new edition of MLS, with Messi appearing in the previous two.

In the Argentine's absence, Houston apologised to their fans that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner would not be at their stadium.
