AIK goalkeeper Nordfeldt was made first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the World Cup in the summer, only to be replaced after two matches by Jacob Widell Zetterstrom. Yet, injury to Zetterstrom was not enough for Graham Potter to name veteran Nordfeldt as one of his three goalkeepers for the UNL fixtures.
Recalls for Melker Ellborg and Noel Tornqvist mean the trio of shot-stoppers have 12 caps between them, and they all belong to Viktor Johansson.
"I think it's a good time to look a little forward, bring in more younger goalkeepers who we need to get to know and gain a greater understanding of, while giving them the chance to gain experience at this level which is important for their development," Potter explained.
"Kristoffer has made fantastic contributions to Swedish football, both as a reserve goalkeeper and a supportive teammate and an unforgettable first goalkeeper in our playoff for the World Cup this spring," the head coach said of Nordfeldt. "He is a player that I have great respect for. I have had the privilege of working with him at Swansea and now here in the national team and he always puts the team first. Right now it is perhaps time to take a step back from the stage and I am convinced that he is ready if we need him going forward."
Alongside the Sunderland and Como goalkeepers, senior debuts could be won in the coming weeks by Hammarby defender Hampus Skoglund and Lech Poznan midfielder Patrik Walemark, both of whom have experience at under-21 level.
In all, Potter has named a 25-man squad as Sweden embark on their UNL League B Group 4 campaign, their first matches since being eliminated by France in the Round of 32 stage of the World Cup. The bulk of the squad from the tournament in the summer remains, but Anthony Elanga misses out having picked up an injury playing for his club side, while Isak Hien continues his long lay-off having suffered a serious injury in North America in the summer.
Eric Smith, Ken Sema and Herman Johansson were all involved at the World Cup but will not be in the coming weeks, while Sebastian Nanasi and Emil Holm have been recalled having been cut from the final squad for the finals in the summer.
With the September and October international breaks now combined into one fortnight, Sweden will play four matches in the space of 11 days. Following home matches against Romania and Poland in Solna, Blagult will travel to Bosnia & Herzegovina and then to Romania. The group stage of the UNL will conclude in November.
