The Danish national team coach, Brian Riemer, has been tormented by stomach pains and nightmares ever since Denmark bowed out of the Nations League quarterfinal with a bitter extra-time defeat against Portugal.

Denmark were only four minutes from booking their ticket for the Nations League Final 4, which is to take stage in Germany, when they led 3-2 on aggregate before a late Portuguese equalizer crushed all Danish hope.

This means that Denmark will instead have to focus on friendlies against Northern Ireland and Lithuania during June. Riemer is looking forward to the friendlies but he would have preferred Final 4.

"I'm still sick to my stomach that we're not going to play the Final 4 and I still have nightmares. I would have liked to have gone to Germany, but we don't have to now, but we have to play test matches", says Riemer to bt.dk

"For me, this is the best preparation for the World Cup qualification - even better than the Final 4. In the last six months, we have been underdogs in almost every game and had to perform above par. Now we have to go out and create the matches, and we have notoriously seen that can be a challenge for the Danish national team."

Riemer has no regrets over the choice of Kasper Schmeichel on goal or the substitutions of Christian Nørgaard and Christian Eriksen just minutes before the Portuguese equalizer or anything else.

"The operation was successful, but the patient died. We lacked the small margins, and that has been an Achilles' heel for the Danish national team for a few years, so we have to figure out how to tip them over to our advantage."

Denmark will face Northern Ireland in Copenhagen on 7 June while Lithuania awaits on 10 June in Odense.
