At just 21 years of age, Colombian striker Jhon Duran, has already made a real name for himself in world football.

Unfortunately for the player, that's as much to do with his attitude and demeanour towards teammates and coaching staff as it is for his enviable skill set.

31 goals in 100 games is near to elite level finishing

In 100 games played since signing for Chicago Fire and subsequently joining Aston Villa and then Saudi Pro League side, Al Nassr, Duran has hit 31 goals.

At just over one goal every three games, that's near to elite level finishing in anyone's book but what makes the youngster's output even more impressive is that he only started in 37 of those games.

His 12 goals for Villa came in a cumulative 1,086 minutes - effectively 12 total games if those minutes are divided by 90 - for a sensational one goal a game ratio, whilst eight for Al Nassr in 1,093 is still a tidy enough return.

Only at the Saudi giants with Cristiano Ronaldo for less than six months, it appears that local laws and a desire to return to Europe have seen the player loaned out to Turkish giants Fenerbahce, now managed of course by Jose Mourinho.

If there's one manager you feel could curb Duran's quickfire temper, it would be the 'Special One.' A manager who has dealt with some of the biggest egos in football and who seemingly always comes out on top.

18 yellow cards and three red cards in those 100 games speaks of a player who either has a problem with authority or isn't able to keep his emotions in check during the heat of battle.

It's something that Mourinho has to deal with quickly and also something that could stop Duran from becoming one of the best in the business.

Chicago Fire expected big things for Jhon Duran

That's certainly what Chicago Fire Sporting Director Georg Heitz expected when they sold him to Villa.

“When we originally scouted Jhon as a 16-year-old, we knew that he had the potential to become one of the top young strikers in the world," he said.

"Jhon’s rapid development is a testament to his hard work and the investment from our coaching staff and many individuals throughout the club. Additionally, this transfer is another example of the benefits of the MLS U-22 Initiative, which was a key factor in our ability to sign Jhon two years ago.”

Duran had become the youngest player in the MLS side's history to win their Golden Boot, his eight goals in 1,363 minutes again showing that the player knew where the goal was.

Fast forward to now and you can't help but feel that it's very much a case of unfulfilled promise for the 21-year-old, despite his goalscoring exploits to date.

Bayern Munich goal gained worldwide acclaim

One only needs to recall the epic goal scored against Bayern Munich in the Champions League to understand how football comes so naturally to Duran.

However, the reason why he's almost already approaching the last-chance saloon is precisely because his spiky and argumentative reputation precedes him - and the baggage that he brings is clearly of no interest whatsoever to certain clubs.

It's worth pointing out that his shooting accuracy remains at a healthy 60%, and 78 shots on target in his century of matches is impressive.

Though he isn't necessarily known for his passing abilities, his range has never dropped below 70%, and his output in this regard went up as high as 76.6% - his second-highest showing - during his stint with Al Nassr.

Fearsome tackler

One area that he's certainly not given any credit for is with regards to his fearsome tackling. Only losing nine from 43 attempted is a sensational return, and if he could channel his evident aggression into this aspect of his game, it would surely begin the process of making him a better all-round player.

Consistently walking that disciplinary tightrope, Duran has somehow conceded 98 fouls in those 100 games which is far, far too much for a striker, particularly one that's only started just over a third of those matches.

And then there's the clashes with his various coaches.

Even Duran himself admitted during his time at Villa that: "There are moments of love and hate (between him and Unai Emery). We've had many problems... We're constantly fighting but I think that's normal for a man of my age and a person like him who already knows a lot."

With an xG of 4.86 in 2024/25 whilst at Villa, which increased to an xG of 6.13 in Saudi Arabia, the talent is so obviously there, but it will continue being overshadowed by the other parts of his game until he changes his ways.

A travesty waiting to happen

For a player so gifted, it would be a travesty for him to go the way of so many other players over the years who seemingly had it all, only to fail to take advantage of that gift.

The ball is in his court.
