It was a great weekend for Galatasaray and Trabzonspor, as they both picked up vital wins against tricky opposition, while Fenerbahce faltered to fall behind their title rivals.

The week started with an intriguing game between table-toppers Galatasaray and the always impressive Samsunspor on Friday, who are enjoying yet another fine campaign under Thomas Reis.

After their 1-1 draw at Fenerbahce on Monday, it was important for the home side to get three points on the board to make a statement, especially against a team as solid as Samsun.

And the first 45 minutes were close to perfection for Galatasaray. A controlled, excellent display saw Leroy Sane - whose form looks to be improving every week for the club - and Victor Osimhen get on the scoresheet to put them 2-0 up.

However, the second half couldn't have been any more different from the first.

Mario Lemina - who has been playing with an injury in the last two games - came off at the interval as a precaution to not push him too hard. The Gabonese is one of the team's most important players and was filling in at centre back.

So once he came off, Galatasaray lost a lot of physicality and presence, and Samsunspor began gaining in confidence.

Consequently, Samsun totally dominated the second portion of the game, and after cutting the deficit in half in the 56th minute, Emre Kilinc returned to haunt his former side with a deflected strike with two minutes to go of normal time, seemingly snatching a well-deserved point.

However, there was one last twist in the tale.

As Galatasaray sent men forward in the 93rd minute, desperately searching for a winner, substitute Yunus Akgun kept the ball alive with a header into the box.

It arrived at Osimhen with his back to goal, and following a first-time overhead kick, he sent the ball into the back of the net in stunning fashion.

It was a gigantic goal, as he once again came up trumps to spare the blushes of manager Okan Buruk and his teammates.

There was to be some late drama as Samsunspor had a huge penalty appeal turned down minutes later - much to the frustration of Fenerbahce and Besiktas on social media after the game - but it was the correct decision, and Galatasaray won the game 3-2.

Yet another momentum-shifting, title race-swinging moment engineered by Osimhen, which was doubly important after the result the next day.

Fenerbahce faced a trip to Nuri Sahin's Istanbul Basaksehir on Saturday evening, looking to reduce the gap back down to a single point.

After a really tepid first-half performance, in which Basaksehir dominated and created the better chances, Fenerbahce took the lead midway through the second period after Milan Skriniar headed home Marco Asensio's corner.

However, Basaksehir remained firmly in the game, as Fenerbahce struggled to gain any momentum, even after their goal.

As a result, they eventually grabbed an equaliser with around 10 minutes to go, as Turkish striker Bertug Yildirim leapt above Oguz Aydin to nod in.

The game petered out from there, ending 1-1. A hugely disappointing result and performance from Fenerbahce, allowing the gap to open back up to three points from Galatasaray.

It has been a familiar theme for the club over the last few years: dropping silly points and allowing their rivals breathing space. The performance was poor, and they will be kicking themselves.

Trabzonspor move up to second

Trabzonspor's incredible season got even better on Sunday, as they claimed a statement 2-1 win at high-flying Goztepe to leapfrog Fenerbahce into second in the Super Lig.

Prior to the game, Goztepe had conceded the fewest number of goals in the league (seven), showcasing what a tough team they are to beat.

Ernst Muci was the star of the show, bagging a brace to continue his red-hot run of form. The Albanian now has five goals in his last three games, establishing himself as one of Trabzonspor's star men in the number 10 role.

Trabzon nearly threw away the game right at the end, when defender Wagner Pina was sent off in the 78th minute, and Goztepe grabbed a goal back with five minutes to go.

However, they just about hung on for the victory, extending their unbeaten run to 11 games and moving two points behind Galatasaray.

Manager Fatih Tekke is doing a truly brilliant job, and they are firmly in the title race now. They look like a very structured and strong outfit, and with no European football this season, they can focus firmly on the league.
