Why Palmeiras' record-breaking capture of Vitor Roque could prove to be money well spent

The Brazilian Serie A championship is always a keenly contested league, and this coming season is sure to be no different.

With only one game played of the current campaign, just five of the 20 teams have had a 100% start.

Palmeiras, with 12 league titles to their name making them the most successful Brazilian club side in history, were one of those not to bag all three points on the opening day, though their goalless draw against last season's league winners, Botafogo, will surely be seen as a point earned.

Although they missed out on that 2024 title by six points, the numbers evidence a campaign that can still be considered a success.

Their 60 goals scored were more than the champions managed, and only one less than top-scoring Flamengo who finished third.

33 goals conceded in their 38 games was only bettered by Botafogo and their 22 wins across the league season was just one less than the eventual title winners.

With 13 goals and nine assists during the 2024 league campaign, Estevao Willian was vital to Palmeiras' push for glory, though from July this year he will of course be wearing a Chelsea shirt as he follows a long line of Brazilians to ply their trade at Stamford Bridge.

Vitor Roque has to put Barcelona nightmare behind him

That gap needs to be filled and may go some way to explaining why the club made the most expensive purchase in South American football history and signed Vitor 'Tigrinho' Roque from Barcelona for a fee believed to be €25.5m.

Still just 20 years of age, Roque should be delighted to return to a league where his form - 12 goals and three assists in 25 league games for Athletico Paranaense - earned him the prestigious move to Barca which, unfortunately, didn't work out.

Indeed, the drop-off in form was noticeable.

Nine goals in 40 games - two at Barcelona and another seven whilst on loan at Real Betis - is almost one goal in every four games but for a striker playing at the elite level of world football, that just isn't good enough.

Though his work rate isn't in question his pass completion rate definitely needs to be looked at, even if one takes the view that Vitor Roque isn't there to ping balls around but rather should be getting on the end of them. Something he's done rather well at for large parts of his fledgling football career.

The player's best reading in terms of pass accuracy in the final third came this season for Real Betis where he managed an impressive 87.5%, but it had gone as low as a pathetic 33.3% when playing for the Catalan giants.

Just seven forward passes played in the entire time he was at Barca is in stark contrast to the two previous seasons with Athletico Paranaense where he posted 29 in 2022/23 and 37 in 2023/24.

Although his shot conversion rate has also gone down from a career-high of 23.5% in 23/24 to 9.8% last season, it's interesting to note that his shooting accuracy continues to improve.

63.6% for Betis this season is almost 10% better than when he posted his previous best figures at Paranaense. 26 shots on target in 26 games whilst at Betis is also an impressive return for the youngster and bodes well for a Palmeiras side that will almost certainly help create more goalscoring opportunities for Tigrinho.

A 42.9% big chance conversion rate and 50 shots inside the box, both at Betis, were the best returns in this regard since his second season in Brazil which was his most successful campaign to date.

That should offer Palmeiras more than enough encouragement to understand that if they get the ball into the central areas that Vitor Roque patrols, the fearsome predator is going to come up trumps for Verdao.

The European experience, however galling his time at Barca ended up being, will also have given him incredible strength of character which can't be underplayed, particularly in the big moments towards the end of the season.

One area where the player has always excelled has been with regards to his diligence and work rate.

Vitor Roque continuing to live up to his Tigrinho nickname

Indeed, Vitor Roque certainly isn't frightened of getting into the thick of it with his direct opponent, and that's shown with the amount of duels he's been involved in for every club he's played for.

Whilst the goals didn't come at Barcelona, he still contested 53 duels and won the majority of them thanks to his tigerish nature, natural desire and will to win.

Combative and competitive he may be but not dirty, as one red card from 117 fouls conceded in his career would indicate. Even the sending off was debatable as can be seen in the footage below.

Ball recoveries and winning back possession are the other areas in which he excels.

For example, during his time at Betis he won the ball back on no less than 42 occasions.

Given the often industrial nature of Brazilian football, that tenacious attitude should come in very handy indeed.

In short, whether it's joga bonito or getting stuck in that his manager, Abel Ferreira, wants from his front man, he won't be disappointed.

If Vitor Roque can continue his recent improvement too, then there's every chance that 13 could be Palmeiras' lucky number this season.
