With both sides in the bottom three and visitors Verona leading their hosts by as many points in the table, this was undoubtedly a relegation six-pointer.
While Venezia came into the clash having lost just two of their past seven league matches, four of those fixtures ended in a sharing of the spoils, giving them an extra incentive to prevail here.
Verona, though, looked the more dangerous early on, even if Suat Serdar’s 11th-minute deflected shot that was saved by the feet of Filip Stankovic was the only time they tested the shot-stopper before the break.
Clear-cut opportunities were few and far between, but one of the few that did fall Venezia’s way ended up in the back of the net.
Although there was a slice of fortune as Joel Pohjanpolo’s effort from the edge of the box deflected off Diego Coppola straight into the path of Alessio Zerbin, the Napoli loanee - making his first start for Venezia since his temporary switch earlier this month - produced a clinical finish to give his side the lead at the interval.
There are plenty of reasons these sides are struggling at the wrong end of the table, and the failure to sustain attacking pressure is one of them.
Both outfits’ desire and determination could not be faulted, yet the two goalkeepers were rarely tested, with Serdar’s attempt that was pushed behind for a corner by Stankovic being the only shot on target between half-time and the 70-minute mark.
Ultimately, though, the Gialloblu did find an equaliser with around a quarter of an hour left on the clock. Daniel Mosquera was released down the right before cutting back to Amin Sarr, whose shot instead fell into the path of Jackson Tchatchoua, allowing him to tap into an empty net.
That proved to be the final moment in what was a rather forgettable match, especially with neither side able to find a winner that would have significantly boosted their respective efforts to beat the drop.
As a result, Venezia are still four points adrift of safety, and while they are proving difficult to beat, they must find a way to win soon.
Verona, meanwhile, do move out of the bottom three with this point, which will make Paolo Zanetti the happier of the two managers ahead of his team’s visit to rock-bottom Monza later this week.
