Como climbed into the Serie A (Sa) top four after defeating struggling Hellas Verona 3-1 at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, leaving them unbeaten in eight matches (W4, D4) across all competitions.

Como had not lost a match since August (W3, D4), and it did not take long for the hosts to get going. Arguably, the most in-form player in the league, Nico Paz – who had contributed eight goal returns in as many matches this season (G4, A4) – beat Lorenzo Montipò with his fourth-minute free-kick, but not the post.

However, celebrations were in full flow at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia five minutes later as Verona left Anastasios Douvikas criminally unmarked, which allowed the striker the time and space he needed to head home Alex Valle’s decisive delivery.

In response, Verona forced Jean Butez into his first save of the match after 23 minutes, as Suat Serdar saw his one-on-one effort brilliantly kept out.

Nevertheless, a calamitous breakdown in communication between Butez and Maxence Caqueret led to the visitors’ equaliser two minutes later. Caught off-guard by Butez’s attempted clearance, Caqueret couldn’t react in time as an alert Serdar skipped into the space left by the left-back and fired the ball home for his second goal of the season.

Inseparable at half-time, Paz nearly restored Como’s lead shortly before the hour mark with a snapshot from the edge of the area that forced Montipo into a fine save.

However, the Biancoblu regained their advantage in the 62nd minute when another brilliant ball into the box, this time from Caqueret, was met by Stefan Posch, who powered his header into the back of the net.

Chances came and went for Caqueret and Lucas Da Cunha in a relatively drab conclusion to the second half until the second minute of injury time. Brought off the bench by Cesc Fabregas, Jesus Rodriguez put the ball on a plate for Mergim Vojvoda to smash past Montipo, sealing all three points for Como.

Another unbeaten home outing for Como in 2025 (W5, D2) lifts Fabregas’ side up to fourth position in the SA standings. Meanwhile, Verona’s wait for their first win of the season continues (D5, L4), having not won a top-flight H2H since December 1986.
