Why Newcastle need to rewrite Premier League history as they prepare to face Liverpool

Newcastle's first home game of the 2025/26 campaign is, as the hand of fate would decree, against Premier League champions, Liverpool.

This fixture has often been an epic encounter between two teams that love to get on the front foot and play an all-out attacking brand of football.

It was against the Reds of course that the Magpies won their first major silverware in 70 years when they lifted the Carabao Cup aloft at Wembley back in March.

On target that day was Newcastle talisman, Alexander Isak, a player that has become public enemy number one after trying to force through a move to the Anfield giants before the closure of the summer transfer window.

Isak not part of Newcastle matchday squad again

With the Swedish international again not part of the matchday squad Eddie Howe will need to look for alternatives once more, and hope that his attack won't be as toothless as they were against Aston Villa in this season's opening fixture.

It was their third consecutive Premier League game without a goal - (they've not gone four league games without scoring since 2020) - having scored 21 in eight games before that run.

Anthony Gordon was the most profligate, taking seven shots - his most in a Premier League game - none of which found the net.

Moreover, the Magpies haven't managed a goal in any of the last four games in which Isak hasn't played (D2, L2). That's despite having a total of 47 shots in those matches and an xG of 5.57.

Goals galore in this fixture

Both teams have scored in 10 of the last 14 head-to-head's however, and the corresponding fixture last season was a brilliant 3-3 draw.

Liverpool under Arne Slot have been a relentless goalscoring machine, the Reds having plundered 90 in his 39 Premier League games to date.

Another goal for them during Monday night's fixture will equal the longest run of consecutive English top-flight games scored in, which currently stands at 36 games between March 2019 and February 2020.

Mo Salah, who else, will be the man to watch, and his record against Howe is certainly worthy of the plaudits.

The Egyptian King has 13 goals and eight assists in 14 Premier League appearances against either Bournemouth or Newcastle, which is the most by one player against a manager in the competition's history. He also has at least one assist in each of his last six games against the Magpies.

Newcastle's poor Premier League record against Liverpool

Newcastle's recent record against Liverpool doesn't make for good reading either.

On their last seven Premier League visits to St. James' Park, the Reds have won five and drawn two, and despite going behind in the last two of those fixtures, they've come back on both occasions (2-1 in 2023/24 and 3-3 in 2024/25).

If that wasn't a bad enough omen for the hosts, they've actually not beaten Liverpool in the English top-flight in the last 17 games (L12, D5).

The last time that Newcastle managed to get one over on the Merseysiders in the league was in December 2015. On that occasion, Steve McClaren guided the Magpies to a 2-0 victory.

Perhaps the most famous fixture between the two sides came way back in the Kevin Keegan era when Stan Collymore famously denied Newcastle at the death in a 4-3 encounter that's often seen as the best Premier League game ever.

Liverpool have won one of last four away league games

The only teams which Newcastle have had longer winless runs against are Man City between 2006 and 2018 (22 games), and Man United between 2002 and 2011 (18 games).

A small crumb of comfort comes with the realisation that Liverpool have only won one of their last four away matches in the league. Three have been lost including their last two against Chelsea and Brighton.

That's as many losses as in their previous 39 league games away from Anfield combined (W22, D14), and Liverpool haven't been defeated in three consecutive games on the road since February 2023.

Furthermore, Eddie Howe has won all three of his first home games of the season since joining the club, with Newcastle's last loss in this regard coming back in 2021/22 when West Ham left Tyneside with all three points after a 4-2 win over Steve Bruce's side.

Rallying cry from Howe

Despite the odds being stacked against his side, Howe issued a passionate plea in his pre-match press conference.

"The first home game is always going to be electric. Under the lights, evening games are always really special for us," he said.

"I have no doubt this will be a really passionate display from the home support. We need to use that - but not be reckless with it. We've got to concentrate and deliver our game plan, but using the energy from the crowd will be vital for us."
