Leeds, Burnley and Sunderland were promoted to the Premier League at the end of last season and will compete in England's top flight for the 2025/26 campaign.

A major talking point over the last couple of years has been the growing gulf in quality between the top division and the Championship below, with questions over whether any of the clubs will have enough to stay in the Premier League.

In both the season just gone and the campaign before that, all three of the newly promoted sides were relegated straight back to the second tier.

Clubs now need to spend a lot of money to have a shot at staying in the league and the transfer window is pivotal to their immediate future amongst England's elite.

There's a general feeling that all three sides will struggle in the coming season - but do Leeds, Burnley or Sunderland have anyone already in their squads that could be difference-makers in the Premier League?

Ao Tanaka (Leeds)

Leeds' squad was excellent for the second tier and proved to be comfortably a cut above everyone else in the division, alongside Burnley.

One of the issues they face this summer, though, is that several of their players fall into the bracket of 'too good for the Championship but might not be enough for the Premier League'.

The likes of Dan James, Joel Piroe and Brendan Aaronson all stood out last season as some of the best in the league but it remains to be seen whether they can make a consistent impact in the top flight.

One player who looks primed to be a success in the Premier League is midfielder Ao Tanaka.

The Japanese international was signed as a relatively unknown quantity at the start of last season but quickly established himself as an integral part of Leeds' 100-point-winning team.

Tanaka featured in every match since joining at the end of August 2024 and earned a spot in the Championship Team of the Season - while also being nominated for the Championship's PFA Player of the Year award.

While not in the side for his attacking output, the midfielder recorded five goals and two assists while earning a 7.2 Flashscore player rating.

Where Tanaka really impresses, though, is in his work linking the play between defence and attack.

Tanaka completed 533 attacking carries last season and was a key component in Leeds dominating so many games.

The midfielder is equally solid defensively and won 194 duels throughout the campaign while also making 217 recoveries.

Tanaka's performances in the middle of the pitch were pivotal to Leeds' success and will be equally important to their chances of survival in the Premier League next season.

Maxime Esteve (Burnley)

Burnley equalled the record for the most clean sheets kept in a single EFL campaign last season, with the Clarets shutting out their opponents 30 times - joint with Port Vale's feat from over 70 years ago in 1953/54.

A key component of their near-impenetrable defence was Maxime Esteve, who featured in all 46 matches as Burnley earned 100 points and only missed out on the title through goal difference.

Scott Parker's side also only conceded 16 goals all season - which worked out to an English record of 0.35 goals per game - with Esteve again one of the key factors.

The Frenchman was a stalwart throughout Burnley's record-breaking campaign and while their attack often felt a little flat, their defensive record will be a huge bonus heading into the Premier League season.

Esteve was incredibly reliable across the campaign and only picked up three yellow cards, while also not giving away a single penalty, which can't be underestimated ahead of a season where Burnley will need to be near-perfect defensively to have a chance of staying up.

Like Tanaka, Esteve also made the Championship Team of the Season alongside defensive partner CJ Egan-Riley and goalkeeper James Trafford.

One problem the Clarest will face in the coming months is replacing Esteve's partner, with Egan-Riley leaving on a free transfer to Marseille, while transfer rumours surrounding Trafford's future continue to grow.

Esteve himself has also been the subject of reported interest elsewhere but Burnley will be desperate to keep him for what is bound to be a tough upcoming campaign.

Eliezer Mayenda (Sunderland)

Sunderland didn't hit the heights of Leeds and Burnley throughout the regular season but achieved promotion via the play-offs, with Eliezer Mayenda playing a starring role across all three games.

The Spaniard started up front in both semi-final fixtures as well as the final and scored twice, including the all-important equaliser at Wembley against Sheffield United.

Mayenda's quality stretched far beyond the play-offs though, with the 20-year-old vastly improving across the season and notching 10 goals and five assists from 25 starts.

Before last season, the forward had barely featured at all and was returning to the club off the back of an unsuccessful loan spell in Scotland with Hibernian.

Since the start of the 2024/25 campaign, though, he has developed into a formidable forward and even earned a call-up to Spain's under-21 squad.

Capable of spearheading the attack as well as playing on either wing, Mayenda has quickly emerged as one of Sunderland's biggest offensive threats.

In a team primarily based on young talent, the neutral would understandably tip the Black Cats for an immediate return to the Championship next season.

Some serious additions are required and Regis Le Bris' side does need some more firepower up top - but Mayenda looks to have all the tools to become an impressive Premier League striker.

The forward is perhaps one of the only players in the squad to possess a level of pace that can harm any defence, and while his finishing can be erratic, the dramatic improvements over such a short space of time suggest there is plenty more to come from the youngster.

Mayenda also possesses a level of fearlessness that is often only seen in young, hungry players and he is certainly someone to keep an eye on heading into the new season.
