Lorient valiantly held Paris Saint-Germain to a 1-1 draw in Ligue 1, meaning that Les Merlus have now avoided defeat in three of their last four H2Hs against the champions.

Arsene Kouassi suffered a knock in the opening minute, but the Burkina Faso international and his Lorient teammates defended resolutely against a PSG side that dominated possession.

Even so, the hosts still had some encouraging moments going forward, although there wasn’t anybody in a position to capitalise on threatening balls from Noah Cadiou and Dermane Karim.

In a sign of Les Merlus’ solidity, PSG’s first shot of the match was a free-kick in the 23rd minute that Nuno Mendes fired harmlessly into the wall.

It was more of the same as the half progressed, with Lorient picking their moments to get forward, and Joel Mvuka forced Lucas Chevalier into the game’s first save in the 33rd minute – even if it was a routine stop – while Yvon Mvogo was eventually tested at the other end by an ambitious right-footed Nuno Mendes shot that the goalkeeper was equal to.

Les Parisiens provided a greater threat before the break, although Mvogo denied Ibrahim Mbaye and Montassar Talbi deflected Quentin Ndjantou’s cross into the side netting.

Luis Enrique responded to a quiet first half by introducing Vitinha and Joao Neves ahead of the restart, and his side found an opening within four minutes, when Nuno Mendes initially saw a header saved but converted a simple rebound.

Lorient responded immediately, though, as Chevalier parried Kouassi’s cross and Igor Silva latched onto the loose ball to emphatically smash in his first-ever Ligue 1 goal.

With the match now wide open, Vitinha then saw a dipping volley from range parried wide by Mvogo, but Les Parisiens were dealt a major blow with Desire Doue suffering an injury on the hour mark.

Both teams went for the win, but Mvogo instinctively tipped Bradley Barcola’s attempt behind and Theo Le Bris fired into the side netting at the other end.

Mvogo then tipped Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s strike over the crossbar to ensure Lorient earned a treasured point.

Although Lorient’s brave display wasn’t enough to take them out of the bottom three, they will feel newly confident about their prospects of survival after tonight’s resilient performance.

As for PSG, they’ve now drawn three times in their last four Ligue 1 contests, and could now be caught level on points with Marseille and Lyon.
