The Ajax board have blocked a transfer of team captain Jordan Henderson (34) to Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco, Dutch media report.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported Wednesday that AS Monaco were closing in on signing Henderson on an 18-month deal, but Dutch media soon disputed this and said Henderson was set to stay at Ajax.

De Telegraaf's Mike Verweij reported that technical director Alex Kroes rejected Monaco's proposal and told the French club that Henderson would not leave this January as he is deemed to be "too important" for the second-placed side.

Kroes would entertain negotiations for a summer transfer of the 34-year-old 81-time English international who wants to move to France, according to Voetbal International's Tim van Duijn.

Henderson arrived at Ajax in January of 2024 after leaving Saudi side Al Ettifaq. The Englishman is one of the top earners at Ajax and a transfer would free up valuable space in Ajax's salary cap.

Ajax have been looking to generate transfer funds during times of financial difficulties. AS Monaco reportedly were prepared to go to "great lengths" in order to reel in Henderson, but will have to wait for the summer window.
