With the Premier League on pause for FA Cup matches, African players in other leagues thrived at the weekend making their mark in front of goal in particular.

Italy

Lazio continued their charge for a Champions League place with a massive 5-1 demolition of Monza, with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru scoring a goal.

The Nigeria international was introduced for Gustav Isaksen in the 65th minute and with two minutes left on the clock, he netted the Eagles’ fifth in the six-goal thriller inside Stadio Olimpico.

The midfielder created space for himself in the box before firing into the roof of the net for his third goal in the 2024-25 campaign.

Adam Marusic opened the scoring for the hosts in the 31st minute after he was set up by Argentine forward Taty Castellanos. Three minutes before the hour mark, Pedro added a second goal with Castellanos helping the hosts take a three-goal lead against Alessandro Nesta’s men.

Before the effort from the Super Eagle, Pedro completed his brace in the 77th minute. Although Stefano Sensi pulled one back for the visitors in the closing stages, that happened to be a mere consolation.

At the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, Assane Diao got a goal but that could not stop Como from losing 2-1 to Juventus in a tough game.

Cesc Fabregas’ team welcomed the Old Lady in a bid to end their back-to-back defeat, but it was the visitors who took a 34th-minute lead courtesy of Randal Kolo Muani.

The home team restored parity through the Senegalese forward in the closing stages of the first half, yet it was Juve who had the final say with Kolo Muani’s last-minute penalty.

Spain

Cameroon international Flavien Enzo Boyomo was Osasuna’s hero as his team battled to a 1-1 draw at Real Mallorca.

With his team down courtesy of Vedat Muriqi’s 81st-minute strike, the centre-back scored a last-gasp goal to ensure Vicente Moreno's men picked a point away at Estadi Mallorca Son Moix

The draw puts a dent in Mallorca’s unlikely European aspirations, while Osasuna remain unbeaten in four league games.

Elsewhere, Mouctar Diakhaby inspired Valencia to a comfortable 2-0 victory over struggling Leganes.

The Malian star ensured his team secured all points at stake with his first-half finish after he was set up by Diego Lopez in the 41st minute.

Although Leganes returned after the break determined to find their way back into the encounter, the hosts held firm to record three straight home victories for the first time in a year.

Inaki Williams contributed an assist as Athletic Bilbao demolished Girona 3-0 at home.

The victory moves the Basque County outfit within five points of the top and strengthens their lead over fifth-placed Villarreal to seven, as they push for their first Champions League appearance since 2014/15.

On the other hand, Girona's European ambitions suffer another setback with their fifth loss in six games across all competitions, allowing Rayo Vallecano to extend their advantage in sixth place to four points after their Friday night win.

France

Auxerre settled for a 2-2 draw with Toulouse in a French elite division clash with Hamed Traore among the scorers at the Estadio de l'Abbe-Deschamps.

Hoping to move level on points with the visitors, they got off to a flying start and created a lot of opportunities.

Their persistence paid off in the 62nd minute thanks to Jubal Junior’s strike. The lead did not last long though as Charlie Cresswell headed home the equaliser five minutes later.

Traore restored the lead with a cool finish in the 73rd minute but Noah Edjouma ensured the cracker ended on a no winner, no vanquished note when he tapped home a cross from Shavy Babicka.

Andre Ayew’s La Havre continued their mission to escape relegation with a shock 2-1 win at highflying Lille.

While the Ghana international had a seemingly quiet game, his teammates took up the challenge with Egypt’s Ahmed Hassan and Senegal’s Issa Soumare getting the crucial goals.

Cameroon’s Mahamadou Nagida was among the list of Africans who got a goal in Ligue 1 as Rennes picked up a 2-0 victory at St. Etienne.
