Sevilla squandered the chance to earn a third successive home win over Mallorca for the first time since the 1991/92 season, with the visitors making it 1-1 in the 91st minute to move up to eighth place in LaLiga.

The visitors had the opportunity to move up to sixth here and could have taken the lead inside 20 minutes as Pablo Maffeo set Takuma Asano through, but instead of choosing the best option and shooting, the Japan international elected to cross, with the ball agonisingly moving out of reach of Vedat Muriqi.

Soon after at the other end, Kike Salas couldn’t apply the finishing touch to a short corner routine, firing his shot into the face of the unfortunate Omar Mascarell.

Half an hour in, Sevilla’s captain for the evening, Saul, saw his flashed cross evade a team-mate, before Muriqi was unable to head in an inviting ball by Maffeo.

It took until the 42nd minute for either goalkeeper to be seriously tested though, as Djibril Sow's fierce drive from just outside the area deflected off Sergi Darder, with Dominik Greif doing well to recover. However, in first-half stoppage time, the Slovak was beaten.

Ruben Vargas was fouled by Asano, and Dodi Lukebakio’s free-kick was met by Loic Bade, with a further header by Isaac Romero dropping to Salas, who volleyed in superbly from close range.

Early in the second half, Mallorca could easily have equalised when Maffeo’s cross ricocheted off Bade and then Asano before striking a post. To their credit though, Sevilla responded quickly, with Greif getting down low to deny Vargas.

The game felt a bit more stretched than it did in the first period, but Mallorca were struggling to build attacks consistently, and they could have been 2-0 down just after the hour as Salas failed to convert at the back post.

Mallorca manager Jagoba Arrasate made his first change of the match on 67 minutes, with Robert Navarro replacing Asano. That alteration almost paid dividends immediately when Muriqi robbed Bade of possession and lofted a lovely ball into Navarro’s path, only for the substitute’s dink over Orjan Nyland to go over the bar.

Navarro soon went close again and perhaps should have scored, almost punishing Bade’s poor header on the half-volley, before fellow substitute Cyle Larin couldn’t turn in Johan Mojica’s inviting cross.

Dramatically though, they secured a late point as Navarro’s floated ball was spilled by Nyland, allowing Martin Valjent to slide the rebound in from an angle.

Despite Sevilla’s protestations for a foul on their Norwegian goalkeeper, the leveller stood, so Los Nervionenses must wait to secure back-to-back league wins for the first time this season. They face a trip to Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, while Mallorca play second-bottom Deportivo Alaves the following day.
