Last Saturday, Mateu Morey scored his first LaLiga goal for Mallorca. The 25-year-old previously played for Borussia Dortmund before a serious knee injury jeopardised his career and put him out of action for almost two years. Ahead of the clash with his current club against Real Madrid on Saturday, the Barcelona product spoke to Flashscore correspondent Ben McFadyean about his friendship with Mats Hummels, life in Mallorca, what makes the fans in Germany so special and the prospects for BVB this season.

Mateu Morey, after a long injury break, you're back and playing for your home club Real Mallorca, where it all began. How are things going?

"I'm really happy to be back here. I'm enjoying being able to play again; that's the most important thing. I'm also happy at Real Mallorca, a club I played for at the start of my career. I can't complain, everything is going well."

"Really grateful" to Hummels

You once played with Mats Hummels, who played his farewell match against Juventus at the Westfalenstadion on 10 August. There were rumours that Mats was even thinking about playing for Mallorca. What influence did he have on your career?

"Of course, Mats was an important friend and colleague who I hold in high regard - an important part of my time at BVB. I would have loved to have been at the game.

"He often comes to Mallorca and we meet up, we're friends. I'm really grateful to him for his support at BVB and of course wish him every success in his career after football."

You played for BVB from 2019 to 2024, but injuries were always a problem for you. Do you have good memories despite the challenges? What was special about your time in Dortmund?

"Well, first of all, the fans in the Westfalenstadion. The special thing about them is that they always support the team passionately, regardless of the result, which can make all the difference for a player. I think BVB has very special fans who also supported me during my injury phase, which was a difficult time for me. The black and yellows are still with me now. I'm very grateful to the Borussia fans."

Which game was your highlight as a player in Dortmund?

"I think all games are special, but of course the 5-1 against Augsburg shortly after my long injury break was something very special. It was a feeling of euphoria after so much hard work in rehab and of course a great victory. And we know how to celebrate victories in Dortmund.

"Of course, winning the cup in 2021 was also something special, even though I couldn't play."

Thoughts on the new Bundesliga season

You played against Hamburg in the Ciudad de Palma Cup earlier this month and your team won 2-0. Hamburg are back in the Bundesliga, where you played for several years. How good do you think HSV are?

A: Hamburg played very physically, it was very difficult to break them down. I think the result suggests that they were worse than Hamburg actually are. In my opinion, they can do quite well in the first division this season, but of course the Bundesliga is not the 2nd Bundesliga, so it will also be a challenge."

Q: Niko Kovac is entering his second season at BVB. After an incredible run last season that saw him take the team from 11th place to a Champions League spot, the club hasn't made many transfers. Do you think BVB will do well this season?

A: I can't predict that, but they played well at the Club World Cup. They have a good squad with some very talented players. I think they can build on what they already have. BVB are one of the best clubs in the German league and will do well."
