Ajax boss Francesco Farioli (35) declined to answer any questions about the transfer rumours surrounding club captain Jordan Henderson (34) and praised the Englishman's leadership Thursday night.

34-year-old Henderson has been heavily linked with a move to Ligue 1 side AS Monaco, as revealed Thursday by Fabrizio Romano and other notable media.

The Englishman did not wear the captain's armband in the Europa League game against Turkish outfit Galatasaray and handed it to goalkeeper Remko Pasveer shortly before kick-off instead.

Even with all the rumours, Ajax manager Francesco Farioli declined to answer any questions about the situation. "I’m not going to speak about the market. I hear something else every hour, If I start to follow everything I will start getting mad," Farioli said to Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport.

"I said yesterday in the press conference that we will see the fourth of February who is going to be here. From there we will work on, again and again and again.

"If I could have a clear answer about the situation I’d be more happy to give it, not just about Jordan but about everything we read every two hours."

Even though the 81-time English international did not wear the armband, Henderson is still the captain of Ajax, Farioli said.

"Yes, he is the captain of Ajax. Why should I lose an important player, a key player as he is? There’s no reason.

"I think he’s showing his character, his leadership. The armband is just a piece you’re wearing, nothing more than that."

Injury problems

Ajax beat Galatasaray 2-1 in the Johan Cruyff ArenA and secured a seeded spot in the Europa League knock-out stages. Farioli was delighted with what he saw from his side.

"I think the game was brilliant," said Farioli. "The players really showed big character in a moment with a lot of rumours and noise. Honestly, I just want to congratulate them.

"They are showing character even in difficult circumstances, let me say it’s a team of heroes the way they’re doing so far.

"It was a positive night for sure, but the job is not done."

Farioli had to deal with an early setback when Belgian winger Mika Godts had to get taken off with an apparent hamstring injury. With Godts being the only left winger in the squad and the 'Klassieker' against Feyenoord coming up this Sunday, Farioli has to deal with some tightness up front.

"He (Mika Godts) felt a bit of pain in the hamstring. From what he told me it doesn’t look that bad, he just felt a bit of discomfort.

"If Mika is not there (for the Klassieker), we will find a solution."
