Ajax manager Francesco Farioli clashed with a Dutch journalist after the Dutch side lost 4-1 in the away leg at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Farioli fielded a staggering ten different players compared to last week's team against Eintracht Frankfurt. Striker Brian Brobbey, defender Youri Baas, and goalkeeper Remko Pasveer missed the game due to injuries, whereas captain Jordan Henderson sat out due to suspension.

Changing his side in ten different spots saw both fans and media criticise Farioli for giving up on the Europa League after last week's 2-1 loss in the home leg.

When De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij asked Farioli why he didn't ask assistant manager Dave Vos to join the press conference instead of him as it was "B-team night", the Italian lashed out at Verweij.

"I think you are very disrespectful to this group of players," said Farioli in response to Verweij's question.

"I know all of your articles," the Italian boss continued before being interrupted by Verweij. "No, no, no, wait, wait, let me speak.

"When we played against Panathinaikos, and I then changed my players against NAC Breda, you said I made my decision because I prioritise something, but I didn't prioritise anything.

"My desire is to prioritise the next game and respect everyone, first to this team, which has travelled all over Europe and faced a lot of challenges. They always did it with their heads held high, making our fans happy"

Ajax lost 4-1 in Frankfurt and saw their long European campaign - they played their first European match in July 2024 in the second round of the UEFA Europa League qualifiers - come to a harsh end.

"Tonight, we lost 4-1, and they (the fans) applauded the players because this group has done an amazing job. So please have a bit of respect."

'Thank you, next'

Asked by Verweij if he respects the fans and can even explain why he fielded a squad of mostly reserve players, Farioli answered agitatedly.

"(I respect them) a lot. I did the same (changing the players) in many other matches." Ajax only lost one game which followed a European game this season - away at NAC Breda in August 2024. "In football, you lose matches," continued Farioli.

"So you think we gave up today? Do you have the feeling we came here with a white flag? We played until the last minute, tried to fight, tried to score a goal.

"Please, Mike. We've been discussing this for nine months, I always have a lot of respect, so please, again, judge me, criticise me, say and write whatever you want. But avoid saying I don't respect people or speaking about a 'B-team'.

"If we are where we are, if we play 18 matches in Europe, and if we are where we are in the league, it's because of all of these players. Starting from the superstars to the young players coming in, it is a fantastic group of players who give their lives to Ajax. And again - they're making the club, the players, and the supporters really proud with what they do."

Farioli proceeds to shut Verweij down to move on: "Thank you very much. Next please," denying the journalist any further questions.

Mike Verweij caused a stir earlier this season when Jordan Henderson lashed out at the journalist after his transfer saga. Henderson accused Verweij of fabricating stories and confronted the De Telegraaf journalist about it during a press conference.
