On the first Sunday of this season, FC Utrecht and AZ came away as the big winners after the European play-off teams scored big wins.

PEC Zwolle - FC Twente: 1-0

The biggest surprise of the day came from Overijssel, where PEC Zwolle beat last season's European play-off finalists FC Twente 1-0.

FC Groningen loanee Thijs Oosting, also the son of FC Twente manager Joseph Oosting, opened the score after just eight minutes with a tidy finish from distance. It's the second time Thijs Oosting has scored against his father, having done so in February 2022 when he scored twice for Willem II against RKC Waalwijk.

A massive opportunity for Kaj de Rooij was sabotaged by Robin Propper, who played his first game for FC Twente since returning from Rangers. The centre-half nearly scored a couple of minutes later, but was stopped on the goal line.

FC Twente pushed to score in the entirety of the second half, but were unable to as PEC Zwolle, for whom Gabriel Reiziger, son of former Ajax right-back and Champions League winner Michael Reiziger, made his official debut, grabbed all three points in a surprise win.

AZ - FC Groningen: 4-1

AZ, who are in the middle of the UEFA Conference League qualifying phase, opened their Eredivisie season in storming fashion as FC Groningen were beaten 4-1 in Alkmaar.

Right-back Denzo Kasius opened the scoring in the fifth minute, partially thanks to Groningen stopper Hidde Jurjus, who worked the ball into his own net whilst trying to save the defender's low-driven cross.

Jeroen Zoet nearly handed Groningen the equaliser when he launched the ball onto Thom van Bergen's head, but it flew past the AZ goal. The home side were given a penalty shortly after when Troy Parrott went down after a foul from Groningen captain Stije Resink. The Irishman stepped up to take the penalty himself and safely converted in the 16th minute.

Resink's afternoon got a whole lot worse in the 32nd minute, when the captain got a corner on his back and saw the ball end up in his own goal. Marco Rente got one back before the halfway point from a corner and thanks to a goalkeeping mistake from Jeroen Zoet.

Thom van Bergen almost scored the 3-2 for Groningen, were it not for Jeroen Zoet keeping the ball out with an unorthodox save.

The home crowd, who said goodbye to an emotional Ernest Poku ahead of his transfer to Bayer Leverkusen, were treated to a fourth AZ goal instead - Troy Parrott beautifully curled the ball into the top corner and completed his third brace in a row.

AZ book a nice win before their return against FC Vaduz, who host AZ in the second leg of their third-round qualifying matchup on Thursday.

FC Utrecht - Heracles Almelo: 4-0

Europa League hopefuls FC Utrecht continued the hot start to their season with a convincing 4-0 win over Heracles Almelo.

The home side kept Heracles at bay for the majority of the first half and grabbed the lead after 33 minutes, when Feyenoord loanee Gjivai Zechiel headed the ball home from a Yoann Cathline cross.

Struggling striker David Min finally got off the mark in the 62nd minute, when Fabian de Keijzer was unable to parry a shot from Souffian El Karouani away safely, and David Min was there to ricochet the ball into De Keijzer's goal. Viktor Jensen added a third in the 70th minute after Cathline gave his second assist of the match.

After David Min nearly scored his second, Dani de Wit opened his account for FC Utrecht with their fourth and final goal of the afternoon after a beautiful header flew into the top left corner.
