How Frank Lampard's Coventry are hitting new heights in the Championship

It's been quite the ride for Frank Lampard and Coventry City so far in the 2025/26 Championship season.

With 12 games played to date, the Sky Blues sit proudly atop the table as the only unbeaten side in the division.

Best start to a league campaign ever

Eight wins and four draws, 34 goals scored and just nine conceded, represent the club's best-ever start to a league campaign in their history, and though they're just three points ahead of Middlesbrough, the football Coventry are playing at present is on another level.

The goals-to-games ratio is the best in the English second tier for over 100 years, and no club in any of European football's top five leagues have scored more.

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are the only club to have a better goal difference (+26, one more than the Sky Blues), and Coventry are now the only unbeaten side in English professional football in 2025/26.

From Lampard's own point of view, it's some sort of justification of his methods, given how ridiculed he was when in charge of his old club, Chelsea, and also at Everton.

Lampard's awful experience at Chelsea and Everton

The former England international came to be defined by a frankly awful caretaker experience at Stamford Bridge in the 2022/23 season. He was in charge of 11 matches, won one, drew two and lost eight, with just nine goals scored and 21 conceded for an embarrassing 9.1% win percentage.

Coming on the back of four wins from 23 matches at Everton, one had to ask the question as to whether he would actually land a decent managerial post ever again or, like many English coaches - albeit from an older generation (Pardew, Pulis, Allardyce et al) - be cast aside in favour of supposedly more progressive foreign coaches.

Lampard's time at Coventry harks back to his previous managerial stint in the Championship with Derby County, and there are many parallels that can be drawn between the two.

Front foot attacking football, not allowing opponents to settle, scoring goals for fun... the blueprint is almost identical.

When with the Rams, Lampard oversaw 57 games, 24 of which were won, 17 drawn and just 16 lost. Scoring 90 goals in that run was notable, although 70 conceded perhaps should've been improved upon.

Just 11 goals conceded in 2025/26

Indeed, the inability to resolve certain defensive issues appeared to be what led to his being relieved of his duties in the various managerial posts he'd undertaken before landing the role at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Lampard can now point to just 11 conceded in all competitions this season, suggesting he and his staff have finally got to grips with being able to steer a swashbuckling side towards greatness whilst building upon a solid defensive core at the same time - never an easy task.

Key to their defensive excellence has been goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. The 24-year-old has already kept six clean sheets this season, and the five in succession he managed recently ensured that he broke a record held by Horace Pearson that had stood since 1934.

Commanding in his area, Rushworth has an above-average 76.9% save percentage so far this season. Allied to his superb distribution - 92% accuracy in terms of balls played in his own half - it's clear that the custodian's confidence has had a positive impact on his back four.

Solid defensive foundation, devastating attack

Right back Milan van Ewijk, for example, has won 18 of the 21 tackles he's attempted in 25/26, for an incredible 85.7% success rate, whilst centre-back Liam Kitching's 92 clearances are 14 more than next in line, Bobby Thomas (78), and at least 60 more than any other player in the squad.

That solid foundation has enabled Coventry's attackers to go to work with aplomb. Opposition defenders simply haven't been able to live with the relentless nature of the Sky Blues' attacking juggernaut, and it's no wonder that Haji Wright and Brandon Thomas-Asante are doing the business in front of goal.

Both players already have nine goals for the campaign in all competitions, and with Victor Torp also weighing in with six of his own, the trio have bagged an astonishing 24 between them thus far.

When one also takes into account that the majority of Coventry's players are also posting pass completion percentages in the mid to high 80s, there's an acknowledgement of just what an attractive team to watch the Sky Blues have become.

It's been a quarter of a century since they were last in the English top-flight, but there's still plenty of games left in the current campaign before anyone connected with the club tries to get ahead of themselves.

However, if Coventry continue in the current vein, they'll be difficult to stop, which leaves just one remaining question... can Lampard finally get it right as a manager in the Premier League with this team?
