Olympique Lyonnais striker Kadidiatou Diani, who scored a brace in the first leg of their semi-final against Arsenal, already has six Champions League goals to her name, all of them coming at crucial moments for the eight-time European champions and last season's runners-up, who are determined to exact their revenge.

Last season's top scorer in the Champions League, Diani is following in her own footsteps this season.

She is the most decisive player in the Champions League (on a par with Claudia Pina), involved in 10 goals in nine games, with six goals and four assists, and is therefore three goals behind the Catalan, ahead of a final that is likely to pit Lyon against Barcelona.

Against Arsenal, she opened the scoring again and got the Fenottes off to a flying start against an unconvincing London side.

"My objective is to score as many goals as possible for my team. If I'm top scorer, all the better. If I'm not, too bad. But the most important thing is that I can be of service to my team above all else," she told Le Progres ahead of the second leg.

And it would be an understatement to say that Lyon's serial striker has been useful to her team this season, especially in a competition they have already won eight times.

In the previous round, in the quarter-finals against Bayern, the native of Ivry-sur-Seine provided two assists and a goal in 15 minutes to douse the Germans' hopes of a comeback, after Klara Buhl's 33rd-minute opener had put them back in the tie.

It was an outstanding performance that she had already produced in the group match against Roma, when Giulia Dragoni opened the scoring for the Italians.

After coming on for 28 minutes, she scored twice and set up another. When Olympique Lyonnais were in trouble, Diani donned her game-changer's cape to come to the rescue. And she does so with a smile on her face, having endured her first season at Lyon with statistics far from her league standards.

Now, positioned on the right side of a fiery attack, she is having the time of her life.

Back to her best

In 2024-25, Diani scored 16 goals and provided 10 assists in 27 games for Lyon, but what was the secret to this successful season?

"Joe Montemurro asks us to do things we like, and he puts his plan in place, in particular with a lot of play and duels," the 30-year-old striker explained to L'Equipe.

"We like that and we're pretty free. Sometimes I can swap places and play in the middle or on the left. Even though the instructions are in English and it's not always easy to understand, I'm having a great time."

At OL this season, 'Kadi' is playing with two ultra-fast strikers, Melchie Dumornay and Tabitha Chawinga, to form a frightening trio.

Dumornay started out as a midfielder, but Montemurro moved her into a false-nine role when she arrived. As a result, she has 20 goals and eight assists to her name this season, making her the club's most prolific player just ahead of Diani.

Chawinga, on the far left, is on Diani's opposite flank and, like the Frenchwoman, is undergoing a transitional season, having also arrived in the summer as the league's top scorer after a dazzling season with PSG.

Diani is surrounded on a daily basis by two of the fastest players in the Champions League, with a top speed of 31.3km/h recorded for Chawinga, making her the fastest player in the competition.

"Over time in training, we've started to synchronise and learn where each of us wants the ball. We know we're going to be on the pitch together, so we need to know how each other plays. We feel we're getting better and better," said Dumornay after the win over PSG on January 18th.

Montemurro's style of play suits Diani like a glove: with constant interchange between the three strikers, the French international often manages to create chances behind opposition defences by slipping between the lines, sometimes bordering on the offside trap, to finish solo down the middle.

In doing so, she puts to good use her qualities as a false nine which she had to develop in spite of herself during her last season at Paris Saint-Germain to make up for the long absence of Marie-Antoinette Katoto.

The winger seems equally at ease on and off the pitch.

"It's true that I feel good in the group, with the players," she admitted to Le Progres.

"And the most important thing is that when you feel good in your head, you feel good on the pitch too. I hope to keep that momentum going right to the end."

Usually very discreet and reserved at PSG, the social networks of the other Lyon players reveal a radiant Diani, not hesitating to get caught up in the various TikTok trends launched by Vanessa Gilles and Danielle van de Donk.

In the midst of a very international dressing room, she even answered the jokes (in English) of American Lindsey Heaps when the latter asked her where her boyfriend was. Her answer? "He's my cat."

Snow is her beautiful tomcat to whom she devotes almost her entire TikTok account.

"You've got a cat, you've changed Kadi," a member of PSG's communications team chides her, among other private jokes exchanged daily between the Lyonnaises, the symbol of a group that lives well together.

But Damaris Egurrola adds that she has lost none of her composure once the ball is in play: "Diani really is a formidable player. She approaches important matches in the same way as she does training. She's a great player and can make the difference at any moment...

"That's why we're one of the best teams in the world, because we're surrounded by very good players but also very good people, who connect well with each other."

It's a healthy environment and one that could help Olympique Lyonnais win back the Champions League, with the prospect of another final against Barcelona.
