The first ever Champions League 'league phase' came to a close on Wednesday night with a mammoth 18 simultaneous fixtures to decide which clubs would qualify for the knockout stages. There have been several top performers across the opening stages of the new format for the competition - but who stands out so far?

With the league phase now over, it's time to take a look at the best players in the competition so far in our 'Team of the League Phase'.

Using Flashscore's player ratings system, an XI has been put together of the highest average ratings across the opening eight games.

As a general rule, players must have featured in at least half of the fixtures to be eligible for selection.

Goalkeeper

Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid) 7.5

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois featured in six of the reigning champion's eight fixtures, keeping one clean sheet but making an impressive 30 saves.

The Belgian's standout performance came in Madrid's most recent game - a 3-0 win over Brest where Courtois stopped all five shots he faced.

The shot-stopper only missed two matches through injury, both of which resulted in defeats for the 15-time Champions League winners.

Defence

Achraf Hakimi (PSG) 7.7

Achraf Hakimi featured in all eight games for PSG in the league phase and registered four goal contributions (one goal, three assists).

The Parisians only qualified for the knockout stages on the final day but Hakimi has been one of their standout performers, achieving the highest rating of any player on the pitch on two separate occasions - in a 1-0 win over Girona and a 3-0 win over Salzburg.

Nordi Mukiele (Bayer Leverkusen) 7.8

Nordi Mukiele is the first of three Bayer Leverkusen players to feature in our side after a series of top performances in the second half of the league phase.

Current Bundesliga champions Leverkusen enjoyed a solid Champions League campaign after finishing sixth, with Mukiele coming into the side after the first four games to make a big impact.

The Frenchman particularly stood out after netting the only goal in a 1-0 win against Inter - becoming the only player to score against the Italian giants in Europe this season.

Alejandro Grimaldo (Bayer Leverkusen) 7.8

Fellow Leverkusen defender Alejandro Grimaldo has also enjoyed a solid Champions League campaign so far.

The Spaniard has two goals and two assists from the left-hand side and is the top-rated defender alongside Mukiele for the tournament so far.

His best performance came in a 5-0 win over Salzburg where he picked up a goal and an assist in the same game.

Midfield

Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) 7.8

Arsenal's Bukayo Saka was one of the top performers in the Champions League before picking up a serious hamstring injury and has six goal contributions in five appearances (four goals, two assists).

Saka's top showing came against Monaco where the winger scored twice and set up another in a 3-0 victory.

The Englishman has achieved the highest rating of any player in his fixture on three separate occasions and will play a key role for the Gunners later in the competition.

Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen) 8.3

The joint-best performer from the league phase of the Champions League, Leverkusen's Wirtz already has six goals and one assist in Europe this season.

Wirtz has been one of the competition's best players so far and even achieved a perfect 10 rating in a 5-0 win against Salzburg while also hitting 9.8 in a 4-0 victory over Feyenoord.

Like the aforementioned Saka, the 21-year-old was named Player of the Match on three separate occasions.

Malik Tillman (PSV) 7.9

A surprise entrant for our side, PSV's Malik Tillman has been one of the top-performing midfielders in the Champions League so far.

Tillman has three goals and two assists from six appearances and helped guide his team to a 14th-placed finish in the table.

The American's best showings came in a 3-2 triumph over Shakhtar and a 4-0 thrashing of Girona - where he earned a 9.3 rating for both matches.

Ademola Lookman (Atalanta) 7.9

Atalanta narrowly missed out on the Champions League top eight but still enjoyed a solid campaign to finish ninth in the league phase, with winger Ademola Lookman their top performer.

Lookman recorded four goals and two assists in six appearances, including against current champions Real Madrid.

Injury kept him out of Atalanta's 2-2 draw with Barcelona, and it's unclear whether the winger will be fit for the upcoming knockout rounds.

Attack

Raphinha (Barcelona) 8.3

The Champions League's other join-best performer is Barcelona forward Raphinha.

The Brazilian has the most goal contributions with 13 (eight goals, five assists) and his average rating of 8.3 is the highest in the competition alongside Wirtz.

Raphinha picked up the highest rating of any player on the pitch in four of his appearances including a 9.8 against Red Star Belgrade and a 9.1 after scoring a hat-trick against Bayern Munich.

Serhou Guirassy (Borussia Dortmund) 7.9

Serhou Guirassy is the competition's join-top scorer alongside Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski, with both forwards on nine goals.

Dortmund's talisman also has two assists and the highest average rating of any striker in the Champions League.

Two exceptional showings came in a 7-1 win against Celtic and Dortmund's latest victory - a 3-1 triumph over Shakhtar - with the forward netting a brace in both matches.

Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid) 7.8

The final position in our side is occupied by Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior.

Vinicius has seven goals and one assist in six appearances, which includes a superb hat-trick in Madrid's 5-2 win against Borussia Dortmund.

The Brazilian already has more goals than he managed in the Champions League last season despite making four fewer appearances and will likely be a key player in the knockout stages.
