The often tense Champions League quarter-finals as teams refuse to take too much risk, delivered two thrilling nights of first-leg action this year. With spectacular goals, shock results and some eye-catching football, we have been treated over the last two days.

The moral of this week's Champions League story is that scoring from free-kicks is not a dying art - it is very much alive and well. Declan Rice had never scored from a direct free-kick before his improbable double against Real Madrid.

He has now scored two.

Free-kick goals are far less common these days, so it is great to see two in one game and on the biggest of stages, too. There will be more on that later - Arsenal and Rice have a lot more praise coming their way.

Star player - Declan Rice

Only one man was winning this award this week.

Declan Rice stole the show in an unforgettable night at the Emirates by scoring a brilliant brace to help Arsenal stun the holders Real Madrid 3-0. Rice's magic has put Arsenal in the driver's seat in the tie and Real have an uphill task to produce the great escape at the Bernabeu.

Most importantly, though, it was a performance that Rice will never forget - the night he scored two world-class free-kicks against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals. That is the stuff of dreams.

The Arsenal midfielder led from the front on Tuesday with a faultless all-around performance that was topped off with two goals inside 15 minutes.

Arsenal had been on top throughout, and Rice had already gone close to giving them a deserved lead soon before he stepped up for his first free-kick.

When he ran up with an air of confidence and curled a free-kick sensationally over the wall and into the corner, I think everyone was stunned, inside the stadium and at home. Rice's first career free-kick goal was a beauty and it was priceless.

So when Arsenal won another free-kick in a similar position 12 minutes later, you found yourself going, 'surely not?'

His second was somehow even better than the first as it flew into the top corner like a rocket - unstoppable.

Tuesday night was heading towards a frustrating one for Arsenal as their toothlessness in front of goal looked set to continue.

However, it quickly turned into the Rice show as the England international delivered two magical moments to steal the headlines and provide the supporters with memories to last a lifetime.

Surprise package - Arsenal

I don't think even the most delusional Arsenal fan would have predicted them to thrash the holders 3-0 on Tuesday night, but that was exactly what happened during an electric night at the Emirates.

Even at 0-0, Arsenal had been the better team and created more big chances as Thibaut Courtois saved Real's bacon. So when Declan Rice scored back-to-back free-kicks to stun Los Blancos, few could argue it wasn't a deserved lead. At that point, the Emirates was rocking. When Mikel Merino brilliantly made it 3-0, the Gunners were in delirium.

The greatest Champions League night in Arsenal's history was playing out in front of 60,000 fans inside the stadium and millions more worldwide.

Whilst Rice was the star of the show, it was an exceptional collective effort, with every player producing a near-faultless performance.

Whether Arsenal will have enough to beat likely semi-final opponents PSG is up for debate, but they have an incredible chance of making the semi-finals, and those players will forever remember the night they humbled Galacticos in their own backyard.

Team of the week - Barcelona

Honestly, this was a toss of a coin between Barcelona and PSG. Both were incredibly impressive and dominant in their performances, and whilst PSG perhaps faced a tougher opponent and scored the more outstanding goals, Barcelona's 90-minute domination of Dortmund was breathtaking.

From the first minute, Hansi Flick's men (mostly boys, actually) were in complete control, and the brilliant thing was even after going three goals ahead and wrapping up the tie, they were relentless in their pursuit of more goals. I think that is what makes Flick's sides so great.

Not only do they play some mesmerising one-touch football, but they always seem hungry to score more.

And they have scored goals for fun in Europe, highlighted by the fact they now have the top two scorers in the Champions League, with Raphinha one ahead of Robert Lewandowski on 12 goals after both added to their tallies last night.

Barcelona's high line may occasionally provide chances to the opposition, but those opportunities are limited when they are as dominant as they were last night, and that is exactly what Flick wants.

He wants to pin the opposition in by using the high line as an attacking tool rather than a defensive weakness, then allowing their creative masterminds to unpick the opposition's defence, which they did last night with ease.

Watching Barcelona this season, there is rarely a game where they don't create tons of chances. Their only Achilles heel at times is being a bit wasteful.

You can afford to be when you create as much as them, though.

Barcelona are a force to be reckoned with in Europe this season, and PSG might be the only side capable of going toe-to-toe with them in what would surely be a Champions League final for the ages.

Moment of the week - Doue's sensational strike

Desire Doue is quickly becoming Lamine Yamal's rival for the next generation after another dazzling Champions League for the emerging star put him firmly on Europe's radar.

PSG found themselves a goal down to Aston Villa against the run of play after Morgan Rogers stunned the home side in the 35th minute. Just four minutes later, Doue produced the goal of the 2024/25 Champions League season to score a vital equaliser.

It felt like the moment the 'new Neymar' truly announced himself on the European stage, and as he pointed to the ground in celebration to say 'I am here to stay', I believed it.

The curl Doue got on his shot whilst slipping over to clip the post on its way into the top corner from outside the box was ridiculous. The brilliance was beyond superlatives.

After a couple of nights full of great goals, this was the pick of the bunch from a player who has a wand of a right foot.

Every so often in the Champions League, a young player does something that makes everyone stand up and notice. Last night's goal was that moment from Doue in what was a special performance.

It feels inevitable now that Doue will play a key role in any potential Champions League triumph as the tournament reaches the business end.

The tricky Frenchman is going to the top and only he can stop himself from staying there.

PSG have a star on their hands.
