Champions League review: Lamine dazzles for Barca as Martinez exposes Man Utd board

After what felt like a lifetime of an international break, the Champions League returned this week, kicking off a back-to-back run of European action. And it returned with fireworks on and off the pitch as big-name players put on a show, and a certain World Cup winner made headlines for other reasons.

As always, Flashscore has been taking notes over the last two epic nights of action, and we have decided on our biggest champions and flops of Matchday 2. Sabah Baku stunning Slavia Prague in their home Champions League debut in Tuesday evening's early kick-off set the tone for what was to come over the next two evenings.

Later that night, the drama continued as Viking raced into a 2-0 lead against last season's semi-finalists, Bayern Munich, before the match eventually finished 3-3 in a Champions League epic.

And if that wasn't enough, then how about Barcelona coming from 1-0 down in the cauldron of Istanbul to respond like a team on a mission this season and win 4-1? Or Lisandro Martinez exposing the Manchester United hierarchy in an explosive post-match interview after their 2-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid?

And moving into Wednesday, all that needs to be mentioned are results like Liverpool beating LASK 6-3 in Austria, Real Madrid coming from 3-1 down to win 4-3 in Rome, Aston Villa thrashing Fenerbahce 6-0 and PSG outclassing Man City 4-2 at the Etihad.

A Champions League Matchday to live long in the memory.

Tuesday's champion - Lamine Yamal

Although Viking deserve their plaudits and are unlucky not to win this award for their courageous performance against Bayern Munich, it would be a disservice not to give this week's champion to Lamine Yamal after his brilliance on Tuesday night in one of Europe's most intimidating atmospheres.

While Lamine's goal involvements came in a sensational second-half display, his first-half performance was far from bad. The World Cup winner ran the show from the start. He quickly had the beating of Galatasaray's left-back, Eren Elmali, with his low centre of gravity and tricky feet, but Lamine's vision and creativity stood out even more in the second half. With his trademark outside-the-boot pass, Lamine caused Gala all kinds of problems, and it was a joy to watch.

After assisting Fermin Lopez earlier in the second half, Lamine produced a moment of magic for his second assist. It was a piece of skill past his man that in Europe today, only he could pull off. It was pure art, and whilst Anthony Gordon put the ball in the back of the net, the praise almost all goes to Lamine for an early contender for assist of the season.

All in all, it was Lamine Yamal's best performance of the season so far in a campaign that is starting to look very promising for him and for Barcelona.

Tuesday's flop - Manchester United

Where do you start with the mess that is Manchester United? Less than a minute in and Man Utd found themselves in hot water on Tuesday night. After a calamitous early goal from a defensive perspective, the evening rarely threatened to improve. Man Utd indeed missed some gilt-edged chances, and if Bryan Mbeumo had his shooting boots on, the visitors could have scored two or three goals.

The change of system worked out of possession to an extent, but Atletico could run through the spine of Man Utd way too easily at times. As it was, the hosts added a second goal late on after Leny Yoro was unfortunate to be sent off, and Atletico won 2-0 to hand Michael Carrick yet another setback in a season that threatens to get ugly.

But that wasn't the end of the bad news for Carrick and INEOS. Lisandro Martinez gave an extraordinary bombshell interview where he claimed sporting director Jason Wilcox failed to back Carrick in the summer and that the biggest issues at the club come from above.

It was a damning and deeply embarrassing interview for Wilcox, INEOS and the Glazers, and made a bad night for Man Utd, that much worse. For the supporters, however, Martinez has been lauded a hero for saying on live TV exactly what everyone has been saying about Man Utd's below-par summer window.

And for a fanbase very much at odds with the club's owners, any pushback from players against the hierarchy is far more powerful than a supporter-led protest.

Wednesday's champion - Bradley Barcola

Before Liverpool's trip to LASK on Wednesday night, their big summer signing Bradley Barcola faced criticism for his poor start to the season. Six appearances and zero goal contributions for a 125 million signing is not good enough, even for a player new to English football.

That's partly Liverpool's fault for overpaying and putting unnecessary pressure on a young player. However, Barcola clearly needs to do more to win over a fanbase that has been spoilt with world-class wide players over the last decade. And the Frenchman's ruthless and classy hat-trick as Liverpool thrashed LASK 6-3 will have done him the world of good. Now Barcola has shown what he can do; Liverpool supporters will surely afford him more patience.

Barcola has blistering pace to get past his man, can go down the touchline or cut inside with great effect, and when he runs on instinct in front of goal - he is clinical. He was all of those things against LASK, as he caused their defence nightmares, and when his chances came, Barcola made no mistake.

His link-up with Florian Wirtz will also excite supporters because if those two develop chemistry and understanding, you suddenly have two talented players with high football IQ on the same page, and that has potential.

Wednesday's flop - Fenerbahce

Away games in Europe are never easy assignments, and Aston Villa's Europa League opponents last season discovered how difficult it is at Villa Park against Unai Emery's side. And while a new-look Fenerbahce have struggled to gel in the opening months of the season, this is an experienced side with players who have had very successful careers running through the core of the team.

Getting a result at Villa Park was never going to be easy, but against a Villa side that has had a mixed start to the season after losing their star players in the summer, Fener might have fancied their chances. So getting annihilated 6-0 and allowing forgotten man Ross Barkley to score a brace is very much worthy of this award.

Fenerbahce were outfought and outclassed against a team sat 16th in the Premier League. Above all, it highlights the quality difference between the Premier League and the Turkish Super Lig, even after all the money spent in Turkey.
