Bayern Munich earned a vital 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain to strengthen their position in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) standings, in addition to their fourth consecutive H2H win in this competition.

Matvey Safonov was selected ahead of Gianluigi Donnarumma and was busy early on, tipping Joshua Kimmich’s corner delivery away before denying venomous strikes from Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané.

Having overcome the initial pressure from Bayern, Les Parisiens improved as the half progressed but Ousmane Dembélé sent his attempt trickling harmlessly into Manuel Neuer’s grasp.

Looking to provide a moment of inspiration in what was now a tight affair, Kingsley Coman danced through blue shirts and into the box but fired off-target shortly before the half-hour mark.

Warren Zaïre-Emery then had a golden opportunity at the other end but made a mess of his shot, before Dembélé worked space from Kim Min-jae and forced Neuer into a strong save and João Neves fizzed his follow-up wide.

Any PSG momentum was completely halted in the 38th minute, when Safonov’s unconvincing punch from Kimmich’s corner saw the ball bounce invitingly for Kim to head it home.

Things could have got even worse for the visitors moments later, as Coman raced behind Hakimi and sent an improvised effort agonisingly over the crossbar. Safonov then dealt with strikes from Kimmich and Sané to ensure the deficit remained one goal going into the break.

Shortly before the hour mark, Dembélé had an opportunity to cancel it out but saw his shot blocked by Alphonso Davies and was shown a second yellow for his challenge on the full-back having been booked for dissent in the first half.

PSG continued their spirited search for an equaliser despite the setback, with Lee Kang-in coming off the bench and immediately delivering an inviting free-kick that Nuno Mendes poked wide.

Neuer then played a superb pass to start a passage of play that culminated in Coman shooting over, before Safonov did brilliantly to tip Musiala’s shot onto the post.

Neves then struck over from the visitors’ best late chance, as Bayern held on and earned their seventh consecutive win across all competitions and back-to-back UCL victories.

That leaves them just one point outside the automatic qualification places for now, while PSG flounder outside the play-off spots having gone without a victory in their last four continental contests.
