Borussia Monchengladbach came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund, extending the Foals’ unbeaten run at home to five games (W4, D1), and ending a run of three consecutive head-to-head losses.

With Gladbach winning their last four at home and Dortmund losing their last five domestic games on their travels, the contest was perfectly poised from the off. It was the away strugglers who got off to the better start though as Marcel Sabitzer flashed a shot inches wide just six minutes in.

Nuri Sahin’s men continued to pose the biggest threat going forward, in a game that was lacking in quality in the final third.

Sabitzer was the catalyst of the visitors’ attacks, but once again the Austrian failed to hit the target when rising highest in the box to head wide. The home fans were left frustrated with Gladbach’s showing, as the hosts failed to register a single shot on target in the opening 45 minutes.

Dortmund continued to dominate following the restart - but the theme from the first half continued - with the final ball lacking in quality. The breakthrough did finally arrive just after the hour mark though, and in stunning fashion.

Jamie Gittens, after his exceptional opener against Bayern last week, did so in similar circumstances, as the youngster collected the ball on the left flank, drove into the box and unleashed an unstoppable effort into the far corner to score for a fourth successive match.

However, just as Dortmund had finally made their domination count, they were quickly pegged back with Gladbach equalising on 71 minutes from the penalty spot after Pascal Gross was penalised.

Kevin Stoger made no mistake, tucking his spot-kick away to draw level and set up a frantic finish, in which the Foals looked the better side, with Robin Hack was denied a superb goal after Gregor Kobel made a fingertip save onto the bar.

Following that opportunity, neither side was able to threaten for the winning goal as a game lacking in quality got the result it deserved. Tomas Cvancara was shown a late red card for two bookings in quick succession having been on the pitch for just over five minutes, summing up a poor evening.

Despite coming from behind, a draw does little to improve Gladbach’s league position with Gerardo Seoane’s men sitting in 11th, while Dortmund remain in fifth but remain at risk of dropping further down the table if results go against them later this weekend.
