Harry Kane netted a hat-trick as Bayern Munich strolled to a 6-0 win over RB Leipzig, keeping their 14-year unbeaten streak on the Bundesliga’s opening weekend rolling and condemning Ole Werner to defeat in his first match in charge of Die Roten Bullen.

The pre-match festivities on this opening night of the Bundesliga season did nothing to distract Werner’s new side, who were under no illusions that they would not face an easy time at the reigning champions’ fortress. They did well to keep things low-key for the opening minutes, but chances eventually began to leak through.

Kane volleyed Joshua Kimmich’s chipped cross just wide of the mark, but amends were made moments later by Michael Olise, who lasered his finish into the far corner after Castello Lukeba‘s unfortunate touch into his path.

Leipzig responded with immediate chances of their own, but a silky smooth forward move saw them undone again five minutes later, culminating in Luis Diaz smashing in off the bar on his Bundesliga debut.

That appeared to end the visitors’ hopes both in reality and in their heads, and Bayern surged to another as Olise cut inside on Serge Gnabry’s through pass and slotted in on his left foot.

Signs were slightly more encouraging for Ole Werner’s men as the second half got underway, and Antonio Nusa was just inches away from finding the bottom corner with a curling effort.

But the quality in Bayern’s ranks meant that they could fashion an opening at seemingly any moment, and they were soon four to the good when Kane passed into the net following a blistering counter.

Nusa thought that he had undone that just two minutes later, but his strike was bizarrely ruled out after a lengthy delay due to a rolling ball when the initial free-kick was taken.

And that was thoroughly punished by Bayern’s main man, who hit twice in quick succession to complete a stunning eighth Bundesliga hat-trick. Both came from similar situations, with England’s record goalscorer finishing brilliantly underneath Peter Gulacsi from the left side of the area.

Vincent Kompany’s ruthless Bayern were satisfied to leave it at six, continuing their perfect start to the season after lifting the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup last weekend.

Starting your tenure with the season’s most fear-inducing fixture is never ideal, but it will be difficult for Werner to restore his side’s morale after the magnitude of this scoreline.
