Could Michael Olise be the ideal long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool?

When Mohamed Salah put pen to paper on a new two-year Liverpool contract in April, it brought to an end months of speculation as to whether the Egyptian King would remain at Anfield for the foreseeable future or if he would be persuaded to move to the Middle East and all of the riches that the Saudi Pro League had to offer.

By the time the deal runs out in summer 2027 Salah will be 35 years of age, and as unpalatable a thought it may be, that's likely to be the right time for ties to be severed.

Salah the model of consistency for Liverpool

That being the case, it would be remiss of Liverpool to not already be scouring the marketplace for his replacement, albeit whomever comes into the club to take over his mantle is arguably on a hiding to nothing, at least in the first instance.

That's because since signing for the Reds in 2017, Salah's return has been monstrous. 246 goals and 110 assists in 403 games played in all competitions.

By anyone's reckoning that is elite level consistency, and it's little wonder that his name is heartily sung from the Anfield terraces before and during every home match.

As other teams have found in the past when their talisman moves on, things are never the same. The club is always bigger than the individual, however.

Liverpool themselves have had to deal with the departures of the likes of Kevin Keegan, Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes, Michael Owen, Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard and still they remain successful.

Arne Slot already looking to the future?

Slot is already likely to be formulating a plan in his mind as to what his Liverpool squad looks like post-Salah, and that may be why strong rumours suggest that Bayern Munich's Michael Olise could be the man to help fill the void.

At just 23, Olise still has a long, long way to go in the game, but he certainly hasn't been overawed by his switch to the Bundesliga giants.

Indeed, his 12 goals and 15 assists in the German top-flight during 2024/25 are the best numbers of his career to date. Following on from the 10 goals and six assists for Crystal Palace in the 2023/24 Premier League season, that represents a significant improvement.

As a left-footed 'inverted' right winger, he operates in the same spaces as Salah currently does for the Reds, and Olise's top-flight experience in two countries will have already stood him in good stead for what might come next.

Another significant improvement in the Frenchman's play is with regard to his passing ability. Not in any competition over the past two campaigns has his output been below 83.1%, and in some cases the completion rate has been significantly higher.

Though Salah has occasionally hit the heights in terms of his distribution, an accuracy of the mid to upper 70s range during the same period hints at an area of his game that is, theoretically, on the wane.

Olise's numbers are encouraging

Olise's shooting accuracy has also got incrementally better as he continues to hone his craft. From 58.3% in the 23/24 Premier League season with Palace, he improved to 62.1% in the 24/25 Bundesliga.

Shot conversion has slightly decreased from 17.5% to 13.9% though one might argue that as a winger, goals aren't the primary function but an added benefit to a team.

In the same time frame Salah's accuracy has deserted him a little, with a 62.2% showing decreasing to 58.6% last season. A small improvement in shot conversion - from 15.8% to 22.3% - is encouraging, however.

Olise's 219 one-on-one duels attempted in 23/24 was only six less than Salah who won just 76 of his whilst the then Palace man saw 109 successes.

In 24/25, the Frenchman's 328 attempts were 16 more than the Egyptian King, and the former was again the more successful, winning 184 compared to Salah's 127.

Big fee won't put Reds off

Given that Olise will still have two years remaining on the five-year contract he signed with Bayern were the Bavarians reluctantly willing to let him move on in 2027, it's a sure bet that the club would want to make a significant profit on the €60m they paid for the player.

Having signed the likes of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak this summer for record-breaking transfer fees, another expensive acquisition isn't likely to put the powers that be at the north west giants off.

A creative, front-foot presence and someone who isn't frightened to take on a direct opponent when given half the chance, Olise has also created more big chances (32) than any other player on the top five leagues since the start of last season too.

A move for him would almost certainly therefore represent another stellar piece of forward planning by the Anfield outfit.
