After a chaotic start, Bayern Munich took control to thrash RB Leipzig 5-1 in the Bundesliga, convincingly going a third consecutive head-to-head unbeaten against a side who had previously proven to be awkward opposition.

It took under 30 seconds for Bayern to open the scoring, as Willi Orban’s wayward pass was ruthlessly punished by a swift passage of play that culminated in Jamal Musiala turning in Michael Olise’s pass.

Parity was restored at stunning speed, with Benjamin Sesko applying a clinical first-time finish to Lois Openda’s ball to make this the first time in Bundesliga history that both sides scored in the opening two minutes of a match.

While the flow of goals slowed down, the intensity didn’t with Musiala’s header being denied by Peter Gulacsi before Arthur Vermeeren deflected Leon Goretzka’s shot agonisingly over the crossbar inside the opening quarter-hour.

Harry Kane then had an attempt deflected wide by Orban as Bayern looked to gain control after the early chaos.

Konrad Laimer ensured they did just that, offloading the ball to Olise and applying the sort of first-time finish to the dinked return pass that defies his previous record of 41 games without a goal.

The hosts continued to push Die Roten Bullen back and Joshua Kimmich made the most of the space that opened up for him, smashing a superb strike past Gulacsi from range in the 36th minute.

Kim Min-jae headed marginally past the post and Musiala’s instinctive hit was tipped over by Gulacsi shortly after the restart, as Bayern picked up where they had left off. Leroy Sane then guided his shot wide on the stretch before leading a blistering break that culminated in Olise firing over.

Leipzig’s frustrations were encapsulated by Benjamin Henrichs’ challenge on Kimmich, and that was compounded when Goretzka blocked Openda’s shot and Antonio Nusa sent his follow-up wide.

Kane then saw a venomous shot saved and Olise failed to turn in Musiala’s fizzed cross before Alphonso Davies strode forward and played Sane through to score and put the contest beyond Leipzig.

Davies then got on the end of a searching Kimmich cross to head home a goal of his own, as Bayern emphatically responded to their shock defeat against Mainz by recording a ninth consecutive home game unbeaten and going seven points ahead at the top of the Bundesliga table for now.

The Bavarians also inflicted Leipzig’s first defeat from their last three league matches, placing yet more pressure on the shoulders of manager Marco Rose.
