Nigeria head coach, Eric Sekou Chelle (47), emphasizes that securing a World Cup ticket remains his top priority following the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) draw on Monday.

The draw ceremony for Morocco 2025 was conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Monday evening at the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat, Morocco.

The Super Eagles have been placed in Group C for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania, as they aim for a fourth title when the tournament kicks off in December.

When asked about his team’s prospects following the draw, the newly appointed tactician emphasized that there are no small teams in Africa but stated that his immediate priority is the crucial World Cup qualifiers in March.

"There are no small teams in AFCON; you need to stay focused," Chelle told Flashscore.

"As I’ve said before, my priority right now is my players and the upcoming matches in March. We need to concentrate on the World Cup qualifiers first, and after that, we can start thinking about AFCON.

"For now, our goal is to win those two games."

Nigeria risks missing out on the 2026 World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, following a disappointing start to their qualifying campaign.

After four matches, the 2013 African champions sit in fifth place with just three points, four points behind leaders Rwanda, with six games left to play in the qualifying series.

March’s fixtures against the Amavubi in Kigali and Zimbabwe are crucial for Nigeria’s chances of securing a ticket to the global football showpiece, as victories in those games are expected to reignite their qualification hopes.

Having missed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after a playoff defeat to eternal rivals Ghana, the Nigerian team aims for a return to the global stage, seeking to improve on their round-of-16 finishes at USA '94, France '98, and Brazil 2014.

The young and dynamic tactician - a former player for French clubs Valenciennes and Lens - was appointed as Nigeria's permanent head coach by the Nigeria Football Federation, replacing Augustine Eguavoen, who had served on an interim basis following the abrupt departure of Finidi George.

Before the draw ceremony at the iconic Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat, Chelle spoke with Flashscore’s Shina Oludare about his aspirations to restore the Super Eagles as a dominant force in football.

Acknowledging the abundance of talent in the Nigeria national team, he is confident that the team will shine once again, emphasizing that the fixtures in March are a must-win.

Although Chelle’s appointment has faced a barrage of criticism, he brings with him an impressive coaching record, particularly during his time with the Mali national team, where his tactical acumen was prominently displayed.

At the 2024 AFCON in Ivory Coast, he guided the Eagles to a strong performance, demonstrating his ability to develop teams and manage high-pressure situations.

During his time in charge, he showcased a deep understanding of the game, a commitment to developing young talent, and a strategic approach to matches.

While his tenure with Mali was relatively short, his impact was undeniable, with many believing that his approach to team building and game management would continue to make waves in African football.

The opening match of the 35th AFCON will take place December 21st, featuring the Atlas Lions against Comoros at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Chelle’s Super Eagles will begin their quest for a fourth African title against Tanzania on December 23rd at the Fez Stadium in Fez.

Four days later, they will face Tunisia at the same venue, before taking on Uganda’s Cranes on December 30th.
