After losing the pink jersey in the time trial on Saturday, Lidl-Trek's Danish sprinter, Mads Pedersen, reclaimed La Maglia Rosa, when he won the third stage thanks to a powerful victory from a reduced bunch.

After his teammates controlled the attacks and led the chase all day on the final stage in Albania, Mads Pedersen claimed the final prize, when he began his sprint early and neither Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) or Orluis Aular (Movistar) could match his speed.

The stage victory gave Pedersen a 10-second bonus, which means he retakes the pink jersey from race favourite Roglic, having begun the day one second behind the Slovenian.

The strong Danne is now set to wear the maglia rosa on Tuesday for stage 4 from Alberobello to Lecce when the Giro d'Italia resumes in Puglia after a day of travel from Albania to Italy on Monday.

Pedersen now has 52 career victories, apparently making him the most successful  pro rider in the history of Danish cycling.

"Having two victories and now back in the pink jersey is exactly what we wanted today. This was the plan this morning," Pedersen explained.

"We wanted to put a good pace on the long climb, to control it for ourselves and give me a chance to breathe there so I didn't need to go over the limit.

"Everyone from the team did a super amazing job on the climb and before. From the climb, it was about controlling as far as we could and then it would be a drag race. It was exactly as we wanted it with Ciccone and Vacek giving me an amazing lead out."

"Ciccone has ambitions somewhere else in the race but he was there to help me, that shows his character. He committed to the team and to helping me. It shows what we can do at Lidl-Trek. I can't wait to get to the mountains and give something back to Cicco.

The stage, a 160-km ride starting and finishing in Vlore and the last of three stages in Albania, was dominated by an early breakaway which included Saturday's time-trial winner, Briton Joshua Tarling (INEOS Grenadiers).

Having opened up a gap of over three minutes on the peloton, the six-man group started to splinter as the bunch began to eat into their lead, with the riders all back together for the final 16 kilometres to set up the sprint finish.

Bahrain Victorious controlled the front of the group in the final kilometres, looking to set Antonio Tiberi up for the win, but in the closing stages, Pedersen's colleagues Mathias Vacek and Giulio Ciccone had the Dane perfectly positioned.

Pedersen attacked early with Strong following but nobody was going to deny the new race leader another victory, and after relinquishing the overall lead to Roglic on Saturday, he will now wear the pink jersey when the race reaches Italy.
