RB Leipzig extended their unbeaten Bundesliga record against promoted sides to 35 matches with a 2-0 victory over St Pauli at Red Bull Arena, reclaiming their place in the top-four in the process.

Leipzig had failed to score in each of the last four league head-to-heads, but it took them just 16 minutes to end that unwanted run.

That said, it could easily have been a very different story as a ball into the area from St Pauli was turned onto his own post by defender Castello Lukeba, but Leipzig recovered possession and broke upfield with Xavi Simons’ through ball finding Benjamin Sesko, and the forward skipped past the challenge of David Nemeth before slotting past Nikola Vasilj to open the scoring.

Die Roten Bullen were restricted to just two shots on target in their recent goalless draw with struggling Union Berlin, however with their second such effort of this particular contest they were able to double their lead.

Having been set up by Simons for the opener, Sesko returned the favour as he pulled the ball back to the Dutchman who fired home from 12 yards to give the home side some breathing room at half-time.

St Pauli were showing no signs of getting back into the contest as they struggled to mount any threatening attacks in the second half.

However, they received a helping hand with just over 20 minutes remaining when Leipzig defender Willi Orban was shown a straight red card for his late sliding challenge on Elias Saad just outside the area, with the winger set to advance one-on-one with goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

The second period wasn’t much of a spectacle for those in attendance, with St Pauli unable to make their numerical superiority count. That suited the home side of course, as they were able to negotiate their way to the final whistle without any dramas to end their four-game winless run in the league and climb back into the top four.

For the Kiezkicker, their three-game unbeaten run came to an abrupt end as they remain 14th, seven points clear of danger and still the only side in this season’s Bundesliga yet to draw an away game.
