Jodar, ranked 13th in the world, reached the round of 16 after defeating Tirante and Lehecki in his first two rounds, both after coming back from a set down. He faced Botic van de Zandschulp in the fourth round in Shanghai after the Dutchman's impressive straight-set wins over seeded Alex Michelsen and Arthur Fils.
In a hard-fought opening set, both players defended well, with Van de Zandschulp the first to fend off break points from Jodar. After no breaks were forced, a tiebreak followed, and Jodar raced to a 2-0 lead, but he couldn't convert any of his next four service points as Van de Zandschulp rallied to three set points with a tidy drop shot. The Dutchman reeled in the set on his second set point, setting Jodar up for another comeback effort.
The determined Jodar opened the second set with a break, and his third break point made the difference after he took out his earlier frustration at two missed break points on a ball boy, earning the Spaniard a caution.
A successful video review helped Van de Zandschulp to his first break of the match, but Jodar responded aptly with a re-break on love. The 20-year-old needed six set points to make the difference, but evened the match out with a 6-4 set win.
The win fueled Jodar, who was unstoppable for Van de Zandschulp in the third set after the Dutchman finished with poor execution, committing 47 unforced errors. Jodar took the set 6-2, reaching his fourth quarterfinal in his last five Masters 1000 tournaments.
Jodar will face Casper Ruud in the Shanghai quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Van de Zandschulp will return to the top 40 in the ATP rankings.
