NHL Nikolaj Ehlers is set to boost the Danish squad ahead of the crucial final group match against Germany which could determine if the host nation will reach the quarter-final of the World Championship for the first time since 2016.

The Danish Ice Hockey Federation say on Facebook that "if all goes according to plan, Ehlers will soon travel to Denmark to join the team before the match against Germany in the Boxen Arena."

Nikolaj Ehlers has so far been busy with the NHL playoffs, but the Dane and the rest of the Winnipeg Jets team crashed out of the tournament on Sunday night and therefore the 29-year-old Dane can now join the World Cup squad.

This gives Ehlers the opportunity to play the World Cup on home soil in the Boxen Arena for the first time after he was unable to join the squad in 2018. At that time, he was also busy with the NHL playoffs.

The last time Nikolaj Ehlers wore the red-and-white national team jersey, he played a decisive role. At the Olympic qualification campaign in August last year, he played a major role in Denmark's qualification for the 2026 Winter Olympics with two assists.

With the arrival of Nikolaj Ehlers, Denmark now has two NHL players in the World Cup squad. Leading up to Saturday's victory over Norway, Jonas Roendbjerg joined the squad and scored twice in the 6-3 victory over Norway.
