Germany is considering giving up its hosting rights for the 2027 IIHF Men's World Championship. Frank H. Lutz, the chairman of the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB), confirmed that withdrawing from hosting the tournament—scheduled to take place in Düsseldorf, Mannheim, and Gelsenkirchen in May 2027—is a serious option.

This consideration follows a landmark decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that overturned the International Ice Hockey Federation's (IIHF) ban on Russian national teams, clearing them to return to international competitions for the 2026–2027 season.

Allowing the Russian team to participate would demand massive additional security measures and costs. The DEB noted it cannot absorb the unmanageable economic risks associated with these requirements.

Other nations have strongly opposed the CAS ruling. Countries like Latvia have strict legal bans against competing against Russian teams, meaning a Russian return risks fracturing the entire tournament lineup.

The German government has strict visa controls, and local politicians may ultimately deny entry to Russian athletes regardless of the CAS ruling.

The DEB is currently holding urgent discussions with both the German government and the IIHF to determine their final course of action.
