Denmark were a goal down with less than three minutes to play when Nikolaj Ehlers equalised for them and then Nick Olesen snatched the winner with 49 seconds remaining on the clock to stun the tournament favourites.
And captain Jesper Jensen Aabo could hardly fathom what had just unfolded in front of a delirious crowd at the Boxen Arena.
"It's completely surreal, and it feels like a dream. We've beaten, in my opinion, the best national team in the world. This shows tonight that nothing is impossible. because for every hockey player Denmark have, they have a thousand", he said to a number of Danish media sources
"I'm completely stunned, I don't even know what to say. Its by far the greatest hockey experience, I have had in my career. Most people would say we needed a miracle to get past the Canadians but we went into the match with plenty of confidence and even though they put us under tremendous pressure, we never stopped believing that we could surprise them."
"We are now now amongst the four best hockey nations in the world, and I just get the chills saying that. I am not sure anybody in the arena amongst the spectators thought it was possible, but we believed it and now we have created ice hockey history", said Jesper Jensen Aabo.
Denmark will now face Switzerland in the semi-finals on Saturday in Stockholm.
