Detroit Red Wings 6-2 Seattle Kraken
The Detroit Red Wings continue their recent winning ways with a 6-2 rout over the Seattle Kraken. The home team got on top early in the match, needing just three minutes and 22 seconds for Marco Kasper to put them in front. Seventy-one seconds later, J.T. Comphrey had doubled the lead for Detroit, with Alex DeBrincat adding a third a few minutes later.
Being down 3-0 after just six minutes and change, the Kraken went for a goaltender change, taking out Philipp Grubauer. That seldom helped, as the Red Wings found a fourth less than two minutes later through Patrick Kane. The four-goal haul within the first nine minutes of the game put the hosts in very commanding spot.
Two more goals, both from power plays, came in the second period for the hosts. First, Erik Gustafsson converted 4:17 in, before Dylan Larkin added the sixth with 4:39 left in the period. It was from here that the game was well and truly over. Despite a goal two minutes before intermission from Oliver Bjorkstrand, as well as a Matthew Beniers marker in the third, Seattle could not match Detroit's impressive opening frame.
Having won their sixth in a row, the Red Wings are up to 10th spot in the Eastern Conference, two points back of the Columbus Blue Jackets for the final playoff spot. For the Kraken, who have lost five of their last six, they are nine points out of the postseason places in the West.
Carolina Hurricanes 2-3 Anaheim Ducks (OT)
Anaheim Ducks broke a three-game losing streak on Sunday after they beat Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 after overtime thanks to a goal from Cutter Gauthier.
The Ducks, who sit 12th in the Western Conference, took an early lead through Jansen Harkins before the 10-minute mark. After that, the goals dried up throughout the first and second periods as the Hurricanes struggled to get going through poor finishing and some ill-discipline.
The game seemed to be slipping away even further from the Hurricanes, as Gauthier netted his first of the night one minute and 18 seconds into the final period.
That second goal from the Ducks seemed to bring life to the Hurricanes as they got back into the affair soon after thanks to Andrei Svechnikov. And, with just seconds remaining in the contest, they took it to overtime with Canadian Seth Jarvis scoring the dramatic leveller.
But, it was Gauthier who had the last laugh, putting home the winning shot nearly two minutes into overtime.
