The National Hockey League (NHL) had an eight-game slate on Sunday that held some notable storylines - especially with Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin (39) pulling within five goals of breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time record.

As Caps fans would say, they lost, but they also didn't because Ovechkin scored yet another goal.

Ovi now has just nine games left this season to break the record or everyone else around the world will have to wait for next season to witness one of the greatest feats in sports history.

Unfortunately, he needed to score quite a few more after the Buffalo Sabres thrashed the Capitals 8-5

Tage Thompson (38) and Alex Tuch (31) both scored twice as the team tied their season high in goals, almost the most given up by the Caps all year.

Hurricanes 6-4 Islanders

The Hurricanes are now the second hottest team in the league after winning eight of their last 10 games, just second to the St. Louis Blues who are currently on a nine-game winning streak.

Despite going up 2-0 to start the game, the Canes fought back to seal the win thanks to a pair of goals from Seth Jarvis (29).

What looked like an Islanders team that could make a playoff push seems to be one running on fumes as they have now lost five straight games.

Canadiens 4-2 Panthers

The Montreal Canadiens are back in the win column after losing five straight games. They now own the tiebreak over the Rangers (75 points) for the second Wild Card spot with under 10 games to go.

Nick Suzuki (23) broke the 2-2 tie with a goal in the third period before Brendan Gallagher (18) topped it off with an empty-netter.

Around the league

The Winnipeg Jets took down the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 for their third straight win streak while the Utah Hockey Club beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 to end their three game losing streak.

In Pittsburgh, the Penguins beat the Ottawa Senators 1-0 in the league's only shutout of the night. Star player Sidney Crosby scored the game-winner in overtime.

Steven Lorentz (7) scored the eventual game-winning goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs in their 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks.
