The National Hockey League (NHL) had several games on Thursday night. A look back at a couple of the matches that took place.

Philadelphia Flyers 3-4 Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals continued their winning ways, as they held firm to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 away.

Matvey Michkov got the goalscoring started with two and a half minutes left in the opening period. The Caps were not behind for long though, as their captain Alexander Ovechkin tied things up with less than a minute to go before intermission.

Four minutes and change into the second period, Connor McMichael put the visitors in front, only to be pipped back three minutes later. Tyson Foerster tied things up on a power play, before Michkov got his second of the game midway through the frame.

Washington, once again behind, came back to tie things up with 13:37 left in regulation via Lars Eller. Despite being outshot 38-26 throughout the contest, the Caps found a way. Jakob Chychrun grabbed what turned out to be the game-winner with a little less than eight minutes to go. Tried as they may, the Flyers could not find another answer, succumbing to defeat.

The Capitals stretch their lead to 10 points at the top of the Eastern Conference standings, winning for the 36th time in the season. Philadelphia, losers of their last five and seven of their last eight, remain second bottom of the conference.

St. Louis Blues 2-3 Florida Panthers

The St. Louis Blues and Florida Panthers played a tight match in Missouri, with a very late goal giving the guests a 3-2 win.

Things started well for the hosts, who went in front just three and a half minutes in through Zachary Bolduc. The lead would not last for too long, as Matthew Samoskevich levelled things up a few minutes later. The Panthers would then take the lead as Matthew Tkachuk converted on a power play towards the end of the opening frame.

Five minutes after the first intermisison, the Blues restored parity as Oskar Sundqvist tied things up on another man advantage. Neither team were able to grab a foothold after that, as they traded attempts to retake the lead. That would not come until the final 20 seconds, where Tkachuk got his second in the dying moments to give Florida the win. It was his 21st goal of the year, which came in pivotal.

With the victory, the Panthers hold onto second spot in the East, even if they are well behind Washington. As for the Blues, they are in 11th spot in the West, although they still have time to make a run.
