There were only five games in the National Hockey League (NHL) on Wednesday night. Here is a recap of two of those match-ups.

Chicago Blackhawks 3-4 Ottawa Senators (OT)

The Ottawa Senators eeked out a pivotal 4-3 away win over the struggling Chicago Blackhawks.

It took the visitors 2:25 before Brady Tkachuk put them in front. Midway through the period, the Blackhawks had a quickfire double thanks to Ryan Donato and Teuvo Teravainen. By the end of the period, David Perron restored parity in the game.

Josh Norris scored the only goal of the middle period as Chicago went back in the lead. However, the Blackhawks responded once more at the beginning of the third. Craig Smith got the goal to bring the game to level pegging.

The Sens, who outshot their opponents 46 to 33 in the game, had to wait until overtime before Tim Stutzle grabbed a winner. The goal was scored just 46 seconds into the extra period to give Ottawa the win.

That result allowed Ottawa to jump back into eighth spot in the Eastern Conference, although they are tied with the New York Rangers. As for Chicago, they remain at the bottom of the West, owning the worst record in hockey.

New York Rangers 2-3 Washington Capitals (OT)

It was back to winning ways for the Washington Capitals, who topped the New York Rangers 3-2 in overtime.

The visitors wasted no time in going ahead as Pierre Luc Dubois fired his team in front just 64 seconds into the contest. Artemi Panarin tied things up with 6:23 left in the opening frame.

The Rangers then went in front as Sam Carrick found the net 8:05 into the second. There would be no more scoring in the second, building up the drama for the deciding period.

Midway through the final regulation period, Alex Ovechkin got his 32nd of the year. The power-play goal not only tied things up, but it meant he needs just 10 more goals to beat Wayne Gretzky's scoring record. Tom Wilson scored the game-winner with 55 seconds left in overtime to give the Capitals a win.

It is back-to-back overtime wins for Washington, who still lead the Eastern Conference. As for the Rangers, they lie just outside of the playoff places.
