Carolina Hurricanes' Danish international star Nikolaj Ehlers will in the future be at the helm of the ownership of the Danish ice hockey club Aalborg Pirates says the club in a press release.

Last week, the Aalborg Pirates announced that the club had reached an agreement with a new ownership group. It has now been announced that the 29-year-old NHL player, who plays for the Carolina Hurricanes, will be the new majority shareholder.

Former national coach Heinz Ehlers, who is the father of Nikolaj Ehlers, will also have a leading position in the new ownership group.

"I am thrilled that I have the opportunity to give something back to my parent club in this way", says Nikolaj Ehlers.

"The Aalborg Pirates have always meant a lot to me, and I hope that I can help, together with the other investors, to give the club the financial boost it needs, so that the club can continue to be at the top of Danish ice hockey."

In addition to Heinz and Nikolaj Ehlers, a small group of local investors are also involved in the future ownership group.

The financial transfer of the club is conditional on a successful due diligence process and must be finally approved.

"This is a dream scenario for Aalborg Pirates. It should be no secret that this was always the solution that I, along with the board of directors, wanted to create", says ex-chairman of the board Morten Fals.

"Over the past 14 months, we have worked hard to make the club attractive to new ownership."

Aalborg Pirates changed directors at the beginning of June in preparation for the change of ownership.

Peter Lauridsen took over as acting director until the new owners were in place.

Aalborg has been in financial difficulties since the scandal surrounding Lars Laursen came to light a little over a year ago.

At that time, it turned out that the now former director had tampered with accounts and that the financial deficit was larger than expected.

Since then, the club has repeatedly asked fans and creditors for money and pointed out that the club otherwise lacked the funds to play at the top.
