The defeat leaves Tappara 14th in the standings on eight points with one round of the regular season to play and at risk of failing to finish in the top 16 and progress to the knockout stages. One of the teams eyeing their position are Storhamar, who climb to 17th with their second win of the competition.
The match remained goalless through the first 30 minutes, but just past the midpoint the upset was on when Sverre Ronningen put the visitors in front. Tappara needed a Benjamin Rautiainen penalty early in the third to level, and thought they had turned the match around when Tomi Sallinen found the net, only for the goal to be disallowed following a coach's challenge.
That decision proved crucial, as just 33 seconds into overtime, Sander Hurrod scored to give Storhamar a memorable win in Tampere. Tappara can now ill afford another slip-up in their final regular season match against winless Tychy on 13th October.
