Sweden eventually enjoyed a comfortable opening night at the 2025 IHF Women's World Handball Championship, taking a 31-23 win over the Czech Republic in Stuttgart, Germany.

Sweden's chances of topping the group come the end of the first day's action was nigh on impossible, after Brazil had beaten Cuba 41-20 earlier in the day, but an eight-goal win over an improving Czech Republic side was perhaps more of a statement from Tomas Axner's side.

The Czechs showed no fear early on with the opening two goals of the contest, but a 5-0 run in response gave Sweden the lead, but they failed to stay in control, struggling to contain Charlotte Cholevova, who spearheaded her side's attack as they levelled at 10-10.

However, Czech Republic could not get that go-ahead goal, and three Clara Lerby strikes in the final minutes of the half allowed Sweden to regrow the lead to four goals at half-time, 17-13.

But the underdogs would not lie down against the 2023 semi-finalists - Veronika Mala scored two in a three-goal run to begin the second half and reduce the deficit to one.

The Czechs would find the net just seven more times in the second half as the Swedish defence stepped up, while goalkeeper Johanna Bundsen made critical saves to preserve her side's advantage. At the other end, Emma Lindkvist was particularly effective in growing Blagult's lead once more.

This time, there would be no Czech fightback, and when the coach's daughter, Tyra Axner, notched the final goal of the game, Sweden restored their joint-biggest lead of the match - eight goals - to wrap up a 31-23 win.

Lerby and Lindkvist of Sweden and Czech Republic's Valerie Smetkova top-scored with six apiece. Next up for Sweden is a meeting with Cuba on Saturday, before they complete the Preliminary Round on Monday against Brazil.
