After their 28-year absence at the Handball World Cup, Riccardo Trillinis men are now close to securing their ticket to the main round after they claimed their second straight win when they beat Algeria by 32-23.

Italy took control of the match from the start, as Leo Prantner, who was leading scorer with 10 goals in their opening match against Tunisia, picked up where he had left off two days before with three early goals to give Italy a 4-2 lead.

In defense goalkeeper Domenico Ebner was like a brick wall, making 11 saves with a 50 % save efficiency before the interval, while Khalifa Ghedbane at the other end was only able to stop 22% of the Italian efforts.

This helped Italy to extend their lead to 10-5 midway through the first half, and they hung on to their five-goal lead at the break with the scoreline 16-11 at the interval.

Both sides were guilty of missing penalty shots after the break as Prantner was denied by Ghedbane, while Andrea Colleluori, who replaced Ebner for a while, saved Redouane Saker’s attempt.

Despite their trouble at the seven-metre line, Italy were able to extend their lead to 19-13, but then awarded the Northern Africans a golden chance to reduce the deficit as they failed to score for eight minutes.

However, Algeria only managed to cut the deficit to 19:15 before Italy got back to their game plan and scored four goals in succession thanks to centre back Pablo Marrochi and left back Gianruca Daripan.

Ebner’s save efficiency dropped to 41%, but Italy led by 25-17 with 10 minutes to go with the game all but settled.

In the end, Riccardo Trillinis men cruised to a comfortable nine-goal victory, as Prantner became their leading scorer for the second consecutive match, this time with seven goals.

In their last group match Italy will face reigning world champions Denmark on Saturday, while Algeria will meet Tunesia for a do-or-die derby with the winner progressing to the main round.
