Former Icelandic GOG keeper could replace Emil Nielsen at Barcelona

FC Barcelona have signed Icelandic international goalkeeper Viktor Hallgrimsson who has signed a a two-year contract the until summer 2027. The current Orlen Wisla Plock goalkeeper will replace club’s legend Gonzalo Perez de Vargas who is leaving for German THW Kiel as well as French veteran Vincent Gerard who will bring down the curtain on his career this summer.

“I am very happy to join Barcelona next season. Playing for Barcelona has been a goal since I can remember so I am very excited for next year. It's a dream come true for me. I am very happy and I can't wait for the moment to meet and play in front of the Barcelona fans”, says Viktor Hallgrimsson who for the time being will be second choice to Emil Nielsen.

According to rumors in the Spanish media, Emil Nielsen will leave Barcelona and move to Hungarian Veszprém when his contract with Barcelona expires in the summer of 2026.

Viktor Hallgrímsson joins Barcelona from French outfit Nantes. Before that, he played three years in the Danish Herreligaen where he played for GOG.

Hallgrímsson has starred as a big profile for the Icelandic national team, and he took part in the World Cup in January, where he recorded an impressive save percentage of 40.
