Team Esbjerg took the first step towards defending their Danish domestic title, when they won the first leg of Championship playoffs Thursday afternoon against Odense with a 38-31 win.

Team Esbjerg is close to claiming its third successive Danish championship title.

On Thursday, Tomas Axnér's girls beat rivals Odense Handball 38-31, and thus Henny Reistad and her teammates will again claim the gold if they get at least a draw at home in the Blue Water Dokken on Sunday for the return leg.

It was once again Reistad, the world's best woman handballer, who set the tone for Esbjerg with 12 goals even though she was heavily manmarked in attack for the majority of the match.

Keeper Anna Kristensen also occasionally frustrated the hosts, who made a number of technical errors, squandered four free throws and largely suffered from deja-vu from Sunday's Champions League final.

During that final, Odense never recovered from a poor start and lost to Györ, and the same pattern repeated itself on Thursday against Team Esbjerg who seemed very keen on avenging their semi-final defeat in the same tournament to the Hungarians.

Tomas Axnér's side thus blew away Odense from the first whistle.

Led by an exuberant Henny Reistad, Team Esbjerg time and time again found space in the shaky Odense defense in front of veteran keeper Katrine Lunde, while a combination of a superb Anna Kristensen, lack of concentration and countless technical errors prevented Odense from getting a foothold in the game.
