Aalborg Handball went into the game on the back of a week which has been a bit of a fairytale for the team from Northern Jutland.
Last week, Aalborg managed to get their their first win ever over Barcelona, and at the weekend they became champions of the Danish Santander Cup.
On Wednesday evening, Simon Dahl's men were, however, brought back to earth again, when the Danish club lost 31-32 away to Magdeburg in the Champions League.
Michael Damgaard and Felix Claar led the way with eight goals for Magdeburg, who suffered from the absence of a number of their profiles. Against Aalborg, coach Benny Wiegert was missing Philipp Weber, among others, and then Gisli Kristjansson limped off the court with an injury.
With the self-confidence of last week's away win in Kielce, Magdeburg provided a stern test for the newly crowned Danish cup winners throughout the match.
With a win, Aalborg could otherwise have taken a big step towards the quarter-finals, but that opportunity evaporated when Magdeburg goalkeeper Sergey Hernández produced a sensational reflex save in the last second of the game to prevent the Danish vistors from equalizing and getting at least one point for their efforts.
The battle for a place in the top-2, which offers a direct spot in the quarter-finals, is thus still open.
Following the defeat, Aalborg surrendered second place to French outfit Nantes, who defeated Pick Szeged on Wednesday evening.
After 12 out of 14 games, both Aalborg and Nantes have 15 points, while the group is led by Barcelona, who have a game in hand with 17 points.
